Is it still necessary to strip DRM in order to get Kindle books onto a Sony PRS 950?

You also have to either convert to epub if it's mobi format or unpack it using the Kindle unpack plugin in Calibre if it's an azw3 format.

Wrong question.
It is still often necessary -- mostly with BPH ebooks -- to strip DRM if you want to get those ebooks onto any device that doesn't support a specific DRM scheme.

That is because many books -- particularly BPH ebooks -- are still sold with DRM.
Inherent in "DRM" is that it needs to be stripped in order to make the book usable except under very specific circumstances.

calibre doesn't support any DRM.
Many Android/iOS ereader apps don't support any DRM.
Kindle doesn't support Nook DRM, Kobo DRM, or ADE DRM.
Kobo doesn't support Kindle DRM or Nook DRM.
Nook doesn't support Kindle DRM or Kobo DRM (though Kobo books are also available in ADE DRM which the Nook supports).
Sony doesn't support Kindle DRM, Nook DRM, or Kobo DRM (though Kobo books are also available in ADE DRM which the Sony supports).
iBooks works with nothing, and nothing works with iBooks.

Moral of the story -- strip your DRM.

I can't get excited about stripping DRM. I'm inclined to just live with what's available elsewhere.

OK, many people who know the answers do frequent both this forum and the forums where this post probably belongs (Kindle forum maybe?) but the fact that you got answers in the Deals forum is an accident!

There are good reasons why you are supposed to post in the forums where you questions are relevant.
It is not because we don't like your thread -- it's because we want to make it easier for people to find you in order to help you!

By default, you are automatically subscribed to any thread that you start or comment in. And if you want to keep track of responses to a thread, you should make sure you are subscribed to that thread.

IIRC, GooglePlay books work just fine with sony ereaders without having to deal with DRM issues.

Yes, I buy books from Google Play for my T1 and have not had any problems.

If you are in the US, booksamillion.com ebooks also work.
