Transflective LCD displays 2020

My watch has a transflective display. It looks amazing! I almost prefer it to eink.
Unlike eInk though, it updates fast. Fast enough to increase reading speed.

Where can I find ANYTHING with a transflective LCD display though? Even just a raw display I can fantasise about pairing with something like the OpenBook/TinyBook PCB.

They are rare in the last 12 years or so. Pretty much only used on things where sunlight readability is more important than viewing angle or colour quality. So indeed a watch is a good application for this quite old technology. OLED is a poor choice for watches due to poor life compared to LCD or eink and excessive power consumption to give contrast in bright sunshine.

However an eink with no colour is maybe best and certainly not too slow for a watch.

They are in Sharp Denshi Notes. They don't sell'em outside Japan and they don't support English. They also aren't really readers but more like digital agendas or notepads. I had one for a while but my model couldn't export a notebook as a single PDF, instead a bunch of pngs, which I found annoying. 6" is also a bit cramped for writing. It also wasn't super visible except in the brightest of rooms and direct sunlight.

The screens can also be had for devices like the Raspberry Pi. I don't think they make good readers though. The high refresh rate is not needed and they really need insane amounts of light to be viewable. There's a reason eInk won that space.

eInk on a watch is not pratical for a watchface with a seconds counter or second hand.

True, but seconds only needed for a stopwatch or specialised application. There are still Quartz mantle clocks with no second hand.

Interesting random fact. Till clocks got accurate, they didn't bother with minute hands!

I notice my eink gadgets don't show seconds but my desktop taskbar clock on the laptop does. Only needed for eBay!

Not sure if these things are still sold or supported, but the old Jetbook readers might be what you're looking for.

You'd probably have to give up fancy fonts/formatting/etc, but for just reading text they might be just what you're looking for -- though, you might have to find one used.
