That is something different as they merely bypassed safeguards that are in place for a good reason. It is no different than disabling a governor that prevents excessive speed.

In order to make those displays, the way I understand them, only show "greys", firmware-wise they would have to cut the resolution in half... Who would do that? And still it would not look like "grayscale", because a red-gren-blue-white mixture hardly looks like grey, which is only "emulated" after the filter! |

This type of thing is extremely common in computer hardware sales. The functionality is there, you just have to pay for the proper license to unlock it.

Spoiler:
Which is not even what I would necessarily expect from Tesla, which has some highlights like employing Lex Fridman but also a history of fully lunatic falls. It can make sense, while the original idea of a tinting layer mesmerizing customers to become invisible upon firmware flag does not. Now, how is this relevant? Are expecting display technology from Tesla or their batteries being employed in information management computing? I am sure CLEARink will sell displays that aren't yours until you buy them. |

Road signage, in dash car displays and the like....yes. General purpose, mass market tablets? Not a chance in hell until a LOT more breakthroughs are achieved

Please show a bit more respect. 2 weeks ago CLEARink confirmed to me that so far front light has not been optimized yet. Compared to the first lighted eink ereaders it looks good. First lighted eink ereaders: https://goodereader.com/blog/electro...eader-displays |

Respect? What they are showing is having folks here drooling for a tablet...but what they are showing is NOWHERE EVEN CLOSE to the needs of even a tablet aimed at text books. And nobody is going to choose such a tablet over other tablets with great screens.
Battery life just isn’t that big a deal once “all day” is reached...compared to not being able to see full color photos. We already know that, far and away, most people have no trouble reading on tablets. Some do...thus a NICHE might put up with a terrible colors. We already have single purpose readers based on eInk. So the “I want to read ebooks but don’t like tablets and don’t need color” niche is filled. So you have an even smaller target market to entice those who can’t stand a modern tablet screen and eInk isn’t filling their needs....and while they need color, only a crappy amount of color. This is not the makings of a mass market product...UNTIL...they can come up with photo quality color AT video rates. And if they had that...they’d show it. That they are going to market with this level of color....means they aren’t close to having it |

#117 "CLEARink Wins People’s Choice Award At SID’s Display Week 2019" Obviously you were not among those people that voted for CLEARink. |

It’s just nowhere near “mass market tablet” ready. And may never be. Take the text book use case. Is it the screens that have hindered the adoption of iPads in the classroom? No. Is it the price? Only partially. Mostly it’s the form factor of a tablet isn’t as useful overall and Chrome books have stolen the educational market. Will ClearInk change ANYTHING about this situation? Not at all...,not unless it’s Apple itself that adopts it. Schools don’t need devices, they need systems. That’s why cheap Android tablets have found no foothold at all...and it’s why I say that the price of the iPad is only partially responsible for its failure to truly take off in the education market. If you can only have one device....you need a keyboard, web driven device. If you can expect students to have a PC at home or in the classroom...AND you can afford iPads too....then you will get iPads. |

They don't 'need' doesn't mean they don't 'want' color. The niche would switch in a heartbeat if offered a competive screen to eink with color

Given the undeniable fact that sales of tablets enormously outstrip those of eInk devices, and that owners of such devices read on them frequently (even if only websites and email messages), I’d suggest that it’s perfectly reasonable to conclude that most people are indeed happy to read on tablets.
