sony reader software sync question

i have put some free epub books on a t1 that is being given as a present. i am starting to wonder what will happen when the owner tries to sync it with sony reader software.
i seem to remember that when i synced my reader full of books with the new empty reader software it deleted all the books of the reader - am i right.

how do i get round this problem?
