Maybe if Harry Potter had read Dale Carnegie's book he could have avoided all that trouble with Voldemort.

Is there a top ten list of book borrows from all US libraries? I'd like to know what the US is borrowing (overall).

The New York Times article about this said that there was an honorable mention, Goodnight Moon. A powerful children's librarian vetoed its purchase for decades (and presumably it would have made the list otherwise).

And it might've been a contender for the top spot.

Those puzzle me a bit. In general, picture books tend to be passed around, kind of like baby carriages and cribs. You use it for a year or two, then give it to someone you know who have kids that age, so I wouldn't have pegged them for big library books. Of course, they are favorites for teachers and librarians reading to a group of kids.
At that age, kids like repetition and familiarity, not new. I got dinged trying to read the Three Little Pigs to my nephew and niece because I didn't read it at all like Grandpa did. |

Do you really think that any ebook (maximum age at a library ~10 years) could come close to a book which has had 6 extra decades of library availability? And almost certainly many more copies available.
To even match The Very Hungry Caterpillar there would need to be 52 copies of the ebook checked out one time per day for 10 years straight. The Snowy Day would need ~134. Ebooks don't even register on this type of scale so its irrelevant. It might be relevant in another 5 decades. |

Ok, maybe it would add some but not enough to move the bar. I suspect they are included though, the digital numbers would be much easier to come by so they might as well include them.
For each copy of a book that they have and assuming it has been checked out continuously for 10 years at 3 weeks per checkout it would add 174 checkouts to the total. At 1 week per checkout, it would be 521 total checkouts per copy. Even a large system like New York is unlikely to have 40 copies of Fahrenheit 451 and have each of those copies checked out for 10 years running and have them checked out for only a week at a time. But if they did, it would be almost enough to catch up to Charlotte's Web. To Kill a Mockingbird would only need 25 copies continuously checked out for a week at a time for 10 years to catch up to Wild Things so it is a little closer to realistic. |

Mine liked both. Every week we would go and borrow 15-20 picture books, and read them all a couple or more times. Plus he had his familiar favourites in the home collection.
