Hilary Mantel Dead at 70

Mantel was regarded as one of the greatest English-language novelists of this century, winning the Booker Prize twice, for Wolf Hall and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, which also won the 2012 Costa book of the year.

The conclusion to her groundbreaking Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, was published in 2020 to huge critical acclaim, became an instant Sunday Times bestseller and was longlisted for the Booker prize.

HarperCollins confirmed she had died on Thursday “suddenly yet peacefully”, surrounded by close family and friends.

Her editor said she was working on a new book when she died.

Very sad news, I was really looking forward to see what she would do next. A wonderful writer who managed to make me sympathize with Thomas Cromwell - no mean feat. I am going to reread A Place of Greater Safety in tribute. RIP Dame Hilary.

I was very sad to read this news. She is such a great loss and who knows what else she may have written, had she lived longer.

I read somewhere that the book on which she was working was set in the 18th century, as she felt she needed to move away from the Tudor period.
