Einstein's Genius Club
The True Story of a Group of Scientists Who Changed the World

by Burton Feldman
Synopsis

Expand/Collapse Synopsis
As World War II wound down and it became increasingly clear that the Allies would emerge victorious, Albert Einstein invited three close friends-all titans of contemporary science and philosophy-to his home at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, to discuss what they loved best-science and philosophy. His guests were the legendary philosopher and pacifist, Bertrand Russell; the boy wonder of quantum physics, Wolfgang Pauli; and the brilliant logician, Kurt Gödel. Their casual meetings took place far from the horrific battlefields of the war and the (then) secret lair of experimental atomic physicists in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Using these historic meetings as his launching pad, Feldman sketches the lives and contributions of the four friends, colleagues, and rivals-especially Einstein, innately self-confident but frustrated in his attempt to come up with a unified theory, and the aristocratic but self-doubting Lord Russell. Masterfully researched, this book accessibly illuminates the feelings of these notable men about the world of science that was then beginning to pass them by, and about the dawning atomic age that terrified them all

Available from, Kobo, Amazon and Apple for $1.99

Per comments on this book: While the statements above talk about a meeting between several experts .... the book isn't actually about their meeting. It's just mini bios of the individual people.

Description
Spying can be a profitable and disruptive business…

Espionage isn’t just limited to the fictional world of James Bond, or even the more real worlds of MI5 or the Pentagon.

Ronald Payne details the world of Private Spies – men and women who sell and buy company secrets.

Just as real and as serious as their more romanticised Government counterparts, Payne details their history, motivations and even resources.

From looking at the earliest known stories of private spying, in the silk and pottery industries of old.

To the stories of individual spies in modern industries, such as arms and even pharmaceutical companies.

Payne shows that far from morally bankrupt, the reasons many private spies “enter” the business, are often more complicated, human and tangible.

Even if of course, their actions are downright unethical, immoral or of course, illegal. And the consequences they wreak are often just as harmful as any leaked state secrets.

Sometimes, they even overlap on an international scale.

But how do you stop such spies who rarely answer to any higher authority?

How can you prevent spies stealing patents and ideas, without enacting Orwellian levels of security?

And what of the private spies that get away? How can measures be improved to curb and indict these spies?

Through his stories, Payne debates these points and more as he unveils a world murkier than any kind of James Bond story could imagine. Though written in the sixties, Payne’s assessment of the world of private spying is still relevant today.

And in some cases, rather prophetic…

FREE Ebooks on Dance and Theater, Courtesy of Wesleyan University Press (and Others).

People who have been MobileReaders for "some length of time," know that Gtrs loves Open Access. Well, basically, he just loves the concept of free anything and everything.

It is difficult to try to sort out all of the different organizations are that are somehow involved in this Open Access free ebook giveaway, so Gtrs is not even going to try. He will simply pass along the following blurb and the URL of the website, for them to check it out for themselves:
Welcome to our collection of Open Access Ebooks in the disciplines of dance and theatre.
Funded by National Endowment for the Humanities and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Wesleyan University Press helped establish and sustain dance studies and the practice of stagecraft through its seminal book publications in the 1960s and 1970s, a tradition that continues to this day. With the support of Humanities Open Book program, a joint initiative of The National Endowment for the Humanities and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, we are pleased to reissue sixteen titles from our performing arts backlist. These titles in dance and theater contribute to an understanding of the evolution of modernism in the performing arts.

Along with these free ebooks, there are a couple of free "introductory essays."

The website to go to has this URL.

All of the ebooks may be available only as PDF's.

It appears that these books would be expensive if a person had to go out and buy one or more. Gtrs picked one at random--The Language of Dance, by Mary Wigman--and checked the price at Amazon. He found that it's not available in digital form there, and the least expensive copy available from Amazon is a used paperback for $69. Now Gtrs knows that this won't be a motivation for anyone grabbing any one or more titles--he's just saying that it appears that Wesleyan University Press, et al. are giving away some valuable ebooks!

Now, being the real man that he is , Gtrs is not really into most dance or theater. But, he did find one on theater lighting before electricity that he thought might be interesting, and so grabbed it. Mainly he's just passing along the above info for the benefit of his fellow MobileReaders who might be interested in dance and/or theater, and might like to have one or more of the ebooks--Free.

Rendezvous at the Russian Tea Rooms: The Spyhunter, the Fashion Designer & the Man From Moscow by Paul Willetts is $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo.

Quote:
Rendezvous at the Russian Tea Rooms provides the first comprehensive account of what was once hailed by a leading American newspaper as the greatest spy story of World War II. This dramatic yet little-known saga, replete with telephone taps, kidnappings, and police surveillance, centres on the furtive escapades of Tyler Kent, a handsome, womanising 28-year-old Ivy League graduate, who doubles as a US Embassy code clerk and Soviet agent.
Kindle Kobo

This has been on my wishlist since before it was an ebook.

9 Presidents Who Screwed Up America: and Four Who Tried to Save Her. By Brion McClanahan.

Only 99 cents.

309 customer reviews; 3.9-stars--mediocre (IMHO) rating a result of 20% 1-stars, from those who are not constitutionalists/constructionists, in opposition to what the author apparently is. Author apparently--based upon 1-star reviews--"goes after" many of the most popular presidents in American history--including Abraham Lincoln.

A reminder: political discussions belong in another forum.

ADDENDUM: Sorry, I failed to put the link to the webpage, earlier. It is here.

Even though I am a strict constructionist, I think I'll pass. On the whole, the USA has done all right for itself, besides we need heroes. These sorts of authors are the literary 'shock jocks of our time.'

Wanting to know who the nine and four were I found the review I link to below. Not only does the review name names but it may also tell you if the book is for you.

P.S. I have no idea who Jack Kerwick is and if he is affiliated with any political group. Ditto for "Townhall".

Books.Google.com/books, will often have extensive previews of books. There are sometimes previews of additional sections of the book in question, too, found here and there on the Internet, but it's a pain to look for them.

Those who are interested in politics would come up with their own two numbers, if asked. Of course, conservatives would tend to have their answers skewed one direction, and liberals would tend to have their results skewed in another direction.

Would anyone be interested in knowing all of the possible (meaning chosen at random) combinations of the 13 presidents? It's 169. You arrive at that number by multiplying 13 times 13.

I bought the ebook. I have very, very little interest in politics anymore (I was a political activist in college!). I looked at the book as having 13 biographies of presidents for 99 cents--a book to skim through for nuggets, while ignoring the political stuff.

Ignore the math, above. There is something wrong with it. More accurately, it doesn't apply to such a situation.
