Dead Irish is the first in the Dismas Hardy series by John Lescroart. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Dead-Irish-Di...dp/B004TS7XPY/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A ex-cop names his poison. For former San Francisco cop Dismas Hardy, Guinness Stout with Bass Ale is the drink of choice, but a straight Irish whiskey will do anytime. The news of young Eddie Cochran's death calls for a double. The cops think it's suicide, but even to a lapsed Catholic like Hardy, it sounds wrong. Doubts lead him back into the heart of the Little Shamrock, into memories of warm kitchens, cold churches, and sins unforgetten. Blood ties still bind Eddie's family--his beautiful mother, his pregnant widow, his hot-tempered brothers, his compassionate priest. But old secrets and raw angers gnaw at the fabric of their lives. And Hardy's insticts warn him-someone else is going to die.

The Daisy Gumm Majesty Box Set is a repeat price drop to $0.99 at Kindle US. It includes the first three titles in the (you guessed it) Daisy Gumm Majesty series by Alice Duncan. I really like this series, although I'm perhaps a bit biased due to having lived in Pasadena, CA, which is the setting for the series, for many years. And I'm also possibly biased due to really liking historical mysteries.

In any case, more info and link are in this previous post from early 2016: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3289497

My friend's parents live in a condo in Pasadena. Their street is where the Tournament of Roses floats are parked over night. I remember being able to go out and walk around the floats before the parade. It was really neat.

And now, back to the bargains...

Free on Amazon UK - The Devil's Agent by Roger Hurn

Spoiler:
London town in 1742 is a lawless place…

It would have to wait almost another century before a professional police force would make its streets safe.

So, there is plenty of work for ‘thief-taker’ Balthazar Bloodwine, a man out on private hire to help rid the capital of the criminals that are as rife as the pox.

Balthazar Bloodwine has the lean and hungry look of someone who lives by his wits and who trusts no one’s judgement but his own.

But the boot is suddenly on the other foot for Bloodwine when is himself ‘apprehended’ one night by thugs in the service of one William Murray, the MP for Boroughbridge and Solicitor General.

Murray is convinced that James Inglethorpe, the MP for Barnstaple, is cheating the exchequer after being awarded a lucrative contract by government ministers to transport convicts to America.

Murray sets the thief taker the task of infiltrating and exposing Inglethorpe and Bloodwine is caught between a rock and a hard place.

The noose is waiting for him if he fails.

Bloodwine is nothing if not determinedly ingenious and devises a clever plan to ingratiate himself with his victim in order to bring him to justice – only to suddenly find himself with two masters, bizarrely beholden to both.

That’s when it all starts to go horribly wrong …

How exactly is the devious Inglethorpe turning his position his own advantage?

To what sinister purpose is Lundy Island just offshore from Inglethorpe’s Devon constituency now being put?

And how can Bloodwine combat the power wielded there by the gorgon-like Rosa Crabtree with her ’heart sentimental as granite’?

Free on Amazon UK - Presumption of Guilt by Roderic Jeffries

Spoiler:
Angus Sterne, whilst travelling in Spain, gambles away the money for his ticket home…

Stranded in a foreign country, he is approached with a proposition: drive a car back to England.

All expenses paid, with extra cash at the end, enabling the owner to avoid a tax law.

Reaching the meeting point, he is surprised that the owner hasn’t shown as planned.

Not knowing what to do, he continues to his brother’s home, without realising the trouble he is about to bring to their doorstep.

To the horror of his law-abiding family, he is arrested for drug smuggling.

Once bailed, Sterne is determined to prove his innocence.

Deciding that the risk is worth it, he breaks the terms of his release and retraces his steps.

Little does he know, the crew that duped him are watching his every move and they are desperate to stop Sterne from exposing them.

Can Sterne obtain the proof he needs before the police realise he has left the country?

Or will the true criminals manage to prevent Sterne from compromising their operation?

Sterne is facing two options: lose his life to years behind bars or lose his life literally.

Is he capable of identifying a third option in which justice prevails?

In a situation where the police seem positive of his guilt, Sterne is determined to win.

Free on Amazon UK - The Price of Victory by Vincent S Green

Spoiler:
When Sergeant Billy Frazier is called to meet with Captain Olson, his illusions are shattered…

He stands accused of purchasing and transferring drugs to Sergeant James Babcock, but due to Frazier’s experience, Captain Olson is eager to ensure he gets the help he needs to avoid a lengthy term in jail.

Taking his advice, Frazier hires Captain Jack Hayes to represent him.

But their first meeting doesn’t go smoothly.

Why would a decorated Sergeant be working in admin? Surely there were better jobs for a man in Frazier’s position?

Maintaining his innocence, Frazier just knows that Jack is the lawyer he needs to escape being punished for a crime he did not commit.

But then Judge DiMarco is assigned to the case; a man who tolerates no-nonsense, a man who believes in guilty until proven innocent… and he will leave no stone unturned.

Frazier is faced with the past and must handle the strain. He can’t help wondering if the jury would really believe him to be one of the greatest drug dealers in the U.S. Army.

Jack Hayes, on the other hand, is eager to win the case in any way possible.

Believing his client’s innocence, he is determined to fight until he wins. Whatever the cost.

Is Frazier really worth the actions Jack finds himself doing?

Before long, the case takes an unexpected turn, one no one could have predicted.

How long can Jack’s faith in Frazier last?

Pursuit of a Parcel by Patricia Wentworth

Spoiler:
The parcel was addressed in sprawling capitals to “Antony Rossiter, Esq. By hand.” There was no more address than that.

A sea-faring man brings an unassuming brown paper parcel to the offices of a distinguished law-firm. It soon plunges intelligence operative Antony Rossiter into the lethal underground of international espionage, military intelligence and murder.

An inexplicable prowler is disturbed in a modest London villa during a lull in the great raids; young Delia Merridew meets a young man in her moonlit garden; an unobserved parachutist drops to the earth of occupied Holland. Now Scotland Yard’s Inspector Ernest Lamb and Detective Frank Abbott must unearth the truth before an implacable enemy claims more than one life in this wartime mystery.

The Murder on the Enriqueta by Molly Thynne

Spoiler:
News travels quickly and mysteriously on board ship. By the time lunch was over, the rumour began to spread that Mr. Smith’s death had not been due to natural causes.

The bibulous Mr Smith was no pillar of virtue. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean on the Enriqueta, he met someone he knew on board at midnight – and was strangled. Chief Inspector Shand of the Yard, a fellow traveller on the luxury liner, takes on the case, ably assisted by his friend Jasper Mellish. At first the only clue is what the steward saw: a bandaged face above a set of green pyjamas. But surely the crime can be connected to Mr Smith’s former – and decidedly shady – compatriots in Buenos Aires?

Stop the Presses! is the latest (2016) in Robert Goldsborough's continuation of Rex Stout's Archie Goodwin/Nero Wolfe series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Stop-Presses-...dp/B01AVTU67Q/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin have a lot of boldfaced names on their suspect list when New York’s most hated gossip columnist is murdered.

There are few people Nero Wolfe respects, and Lon Cohen of the New York Gazette is one of them. So when Cohen asks for a favor, the famously brilliant—and notoriously lazy—detective is inclined to listen. According to Cohen, someone wants to kill the Gazette’s gossip columnist, Cameron Clay. Death threats are a regular hazard for Clay, who’s hurled insults and accusations at every bold-faced name in the five boroughs. But the latest threats have carried a more sinister tone.

The columnist has narrowed his potential killers down to five people: an egomaniacal developer, a disgraced cop, a corrupt councilman, a sleazy lawyer, and his own ex-wife. But when Clay turns up dead, the cops deem it a suicide. The bigwigs at the Gazette don’t agree, so they retain Wolfe and his indefatigable assistant, Archie Goodwin, to figure out which of the suspects had the mettle to pull the trigger.

In this “outstanding” mystery, Robert Goldsborough, author of Murder in E Minor, “once again demonstrates an impressive ability to emulate Rex Stout’s narrative voice” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

There are 21. (I gave "A Rare Bendictine" number 0 in my calibre database. )

I highly recommend this series. If I didn't already have them all, this would have broken my resolve to limit my ebook buying this year!

Totally agree! In fact, I treated myself to drive to Shrewsbury, where the stories take place, when I was in England on business several years ago and what a treat having read all the books.

I want to do this someday too, glad to hear it was a treat!

Based on the Peter Tremayne/Sister Fidelma series, I dragged my family to Cashel on one trip, and even though most of what is there now is 12th/13th century, rather than the 7th century seat of the Kings of Munster as in the books, it was still a very cool visit.

I have read them all I think, but have none as ebooks so have splurged (had to click twice for 1-20 and for 0).
