Stella Gibbons.
"Cold Comfort Farm" is a brilliant spoof of English rural gloom and doom novels written back in the early 1930s, and remains laugh-out-loud funny now. She wrote quite a number of other books, none of which are remembered now. I doubt they would still be available. |

I highly disagree. The Lord of the Rings was very good. Most of the stuff his son is publishing after he died can be said to be dull.

Thanks for that, Ben. I must admit I didn't check before I posted. I still think she's a one hit wonder in that CCF was and remains so well known, but her other books aren't.

I got a couple,
James Frey - A Million Little Pieces (Minus the controversy, it is now filed under fiction) Then the others were horrible I would also extend the parameters a touch and say Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett were amazingly deep character driven stories, and the rest is Pop-Fiction, spy thriller type junk. I say extending because it is two books, but the point is the same. |

Thanks for all these!
Requiem, so would you say A Million Little Pieces stands on its own as a work of fiction? It doesn't detract that the author made it up? Actually the Bible had a sequel, according to some: the New Testament. Would you say that one is incredible and the other is mediocre? And according to some others, there was a much later sequel: The Book of Mormon! eP |

I wouldn't support an author who faked a book this way.
