Hmm.. "US is 75% of Global E-Reader Market, Apple & Amazon Dominate, Says IDC Study" "Amazon was the market leader in e-readers for the 3rd quarter with more than 1.1 million units shipped and 41.5% share worldwide." So, yeah.. I know there is a world outside of US... but Amazon is still king as of that study I read. Could have changed since then of course. But based on that iBook and Mobi are the formats of choice right now. SRC: http://publishingperspectives.com/20...reader-market/ |

Isn't that a bit like three people adding up their grades on a test, and then pushing around students whose grade on their own was lower than the three students' combined grade?

Not at all. It's saying that more people own a reader that handles ePub then a reader that handles AZW.

We use a sort of hybrid distribution. We format our own books and convert them for our online store. We upload directly to B&N through Pubit! and to Amazon through KDP because (frankly) our formatting is better and cleaner than what we get through Smashwords. All that said, the opportunity to get to Apple without having to either add yet another upload program AND buy ISBN numbers (which I consider idiotic for an eBook that will never be shelved, or bar-coded) - and to hit Sony, Kobo, and some other places without adding undue strain to our already overworked staff - totally worth it. It takes time to figure out what does, and does not work well at Smashwords, just like everwhere else, but we haven't run into an issue we couldn't get around (though we had some serious problems with one book and it's footnotes).

One problem is the ebook world is still pretty volatile. If Kobo for example is successful with their move it might secure EPUB, but if Amazon forces B&N out of the market then the battle will be between Mobi and iBook. If some other player comes along it could be some other format.
I think we have a ways to got yet before we crown any format king. |

There is no way in heck we'll get firmware updates for a new format. These companies have invested in ePub. They won't want to switch and because of that, a new format would fail big time.

For now, I backup all my books in to EPUB regardless of what format I bought them in, just in case. |

Amazon said a while back that they intend to (at some point) begin offering a choice (including ePub) so I assume that to mean that they also intend to update Kindles to handle it. Firmware isn't necessary for the change, only an updated reader app. If a free thing like Calibre can read them all, and no one in particular owns ePub, no reason Amazon can't use it. Personally, I say good on Amazon. They did it all first and faster, harder and better, and now everyone is mad because they're winning. Doesn't matter if their format is worse - they have about 2/3 more books than the nearest competitor...
