Lenovo's first Android-based ThinkPad

The ThinkPad Tablet runs Android 3.1 and comes pre-loaded with a suite of business-friendly apps, including Documents to Go (for Microsoft Office compatibility), MyScripts Notes Mobile, Lenovo Launch Zone (an app launcher, basically), Lenovo SocialTouch (integrated mail, maps, calendar, and more), and a USB transfer utility. It also provides encryption for user data and SD cards, outputs 1080p video over HDMI, and supports Flash 10.3.

The big deal here, perhaps, is the optional ThinkPad Keyboard Folio add-on, which provides a ThinkPad keyboard and TrackPoint, transforming the ThinkPad Tablet into a laptop-like experience. There's also a separate ThinkPad Tablet Dock that lets you charge and sync the device. And the Tablet comes with an accurate, touch-sensitive pen so you can take handwritten notes; software built into the device will convert your handwritten notes to text.

The K1 is very thin and light, and at 13.3 mm thick is actually a tiny bit thinner than the iPad 2, which is 13.34 mm. And unlike the iPad, the K1 supports Adobe Flash 10.3. HDMI output from the device is 1080p quality, and since it supports various DRM content types, it could be a viable digital media alternative to the iPad.

Included software is consumer-heavy, of course: Google Mobile Services for Android 3.1, Flash 10.2, Lenovo Social Touch, Lenovo Media Gallery, Lenovo Video Player, Lenovo Music Player, Lenovo eBook Reader, Cloud, mSpot Music, Complete HD codes formats (except for MKV&MPEG-2 & RMVB), PlayReady DRM, Lenovo AppStore, Oovoo, Poketalk, eBuddy, Connectify, Facebook, Twitter, Norton Mobile Security, AccuEather, Dataviz: Documents to Go, Printershare, Zinio E-Mag, Amazon Kindle E-Book reader, Luck Launcher Games: Galaxy on Fire2, Need for Speed: Shift, Angry Birds, Vendetta Online, Murtha Drawing Pad, Talking Tom, Silver Creek: Solitaire, Silver Creek: Hearts, Silver Creek: Spades, Silver Creek: Euchre, Silver Creek: Backgammon, Warships, Treasure Arm, Flash Game Arcade, and more, depending on region.

There's a keyboard dock available for the K1, but it's more like the iPad keyboard dock in look and feel, basically a charger base with an attached keyboard. The K1 is also available in four colors: red, black, brown, and white.

This is the Android tablet the niche market has wanted all along.

The ThinkPad tablet is like a legitimate dream tablet. It has nearly everything a person would want in a Honeycomb tab: an affordable digitizer pen, 2GB of cloud storage, a ton of built-in 3rd party apps, and a 1280×800, 16:10 IPS screen covered with Gorilla Glass. There’s an SD card slot, dual cameras, mini HDMI out, USB 2.0 host, micro USB port, and a SIM card slot. Lenovo states the Tegra 2-powered tab can run with WiFi enabled for 8 hours.

The ThinkPad Tablet is built for enterprise and so security and encryption are throughout the whole system including SD card encryption, lost device disablement and anti-theft software. The tablet ships with McAfee and features layered data security. All this amounts to a tablet with proper data protection whether the owner needs it or not.

Lenovo seemingly built this tablet differently from other Honeycomb tablets. It’s not a closed device with limited connectivity options. There are multiple ways to get files onto the tablet. Each ThinkPad tablet has 2GB of cloud storage and there’s a built-in Windows 7 file copy and syncing tool. Then there’s of course the full size USB host and SD card slot.

You love Lenovo? Wow something you and I agree on LOL j/K I do as well. Their desktop all in one's , the The IdeaCentre A310 is just the most gorogous all in one desktop. I drool whenever I see that .

these tablets do look sweet. I like the business model one. That Folio keyboard is really really nice.

Wow, the more I look at that biz model, the more I like it. Maybe this one could really "work", so to speak...

Of the 3 tablets Lenovo plan to relase this fall I'm actually more interested in the IdeaPad Tablet with Windows 7. The reason for this is that Windows have a proven hand writing recognition software from before. So far as I know it's unmatched by any other.

I don't think the other OSs are trying to compete in that area, the focus has been predictive text.

Coming from windows platform PDA and smartphone I too was a huge fan of hand recognition but after using predictive text technologies, I'm not so impressed with it.

I can write it off as still not ready but the truth is I don't believe any technology will ever be able to read my chicken scratch. I recall the process was a three step process: write, recognize, fix recondition errors.
The last step is what took the longest based on how bad the recognition was. In the end I started using the one character at a time recognition, but it's not nowhere hear as fast as predictive text.

The power of Windows 7 is that it's designed for real computing and will have a more multitasking support than the other OSs. None of this silly apps run in maximized screen mode.
