"Reflash from CF" for the iLiad released!

iRex has released the developer version of the reflash tool here. It is available to select developers upon request. A version for the general public is to follow soon.

The developer version allows for the following.
  • Reflash the Kernel, initrd, and applications individually
  • Format and reflash everything
  • Boot an alternate kernel from the CF card

This is great news for all iLiad owners and developers.

In my first test it works well.

Now I think I have to bite the bullet and try to intentionally mess something up.

So does that mean we can finally brick our devices and use this tool to reenable them?

As a quick test, I changed in /etc/fstab the root filesystem as read-only. When rebooting the Iliad completely hangs. Using the restore tool I could reflash everything to a working iliad. Great!

W00t! I've made a custom filesystem image that will automatically include the unbrickable package. I shouldn't be locked out of my iLiad for any reason now.

This is great, assuming this isn't super specialised for your own requirements, will you be releasing it for other tinkerers?

I'd be happy to profide hosting for it if bandwidth is an issue.

Unfortunately, according to iRex's reflash documentation, I cannot.

It's really not that hard to do. I can provide a tutorial if anyone's interested.

I don't know if it would be faster, but I'm pretty sure it would use more power.

A tutorial would be much appreciated, thanks.

So, does that stipulation effectively nix a community developed OS?

There are two approaches around that:
1. Rewrite all the closed source parts (which right now is nearly impossible)
2. Make the community developed OS a patch over the irex supplied OS.

I think that (2) is quite doable. With the sufficient care (using a static binary that does the changes to the filesystem), one should be able to even change the libc.

Either way, having the restore utility is a great step in the right direction. Now I'll have to buy a CF card or I'll be out of the game ...
