Free Books (Kindle) - Twelve Days of Winter

Thirteen books, all by Stuart MacBride, free to pre-order on Kindle, but only for those in Australia (so far, although I suspect this is all a pricing error).

Twelve Days of Winter: Crime at Christmas

Book Description
A collection of interlinked tales of crime and retribution laced with dark humour, set around the festive season – from the No. 1 bestseller Stuart MacBrideThieves, drug dealers, lap-dancers, gangsters and even the odd good guy populate these twelve tales exploring the seedier side of life in North East Scotland.

These twelve appear to be the individual stories from the above collection:
  1. A Partridge in a Pear Tree
  2. Turtle Doves
  3. French Hens
  4. Calling Birds
  5. Gold Rings
  6. Geese A Laying
  7. Swans A Swimming
  8. Maids A Milking
  9. Ladies Dancing
  10. Lords A Leaping
  11. Pipers Piping
  12. Drummers Drumming

All I get is a 'currently not available' message. Not even a pre-order button to click on.

Only the first two short stories are (or, at least WERE) available for those in the US (and at $1.99/each). The free prices were for Australia only - I can check again later, when at a computer, as it's a major PITA to try on the iPad.

Is a kindle pre-order the same as with print books? Do they honour the price that you order it at, even if the price goes up? So, if you pre-order a kindle book when it's listed as free (like this one) then you get it for free?

Sorry if this isn't an appropriate place to ask.

I've gotten some in the past as pre-orders that were listed at $0.00 at the time narflet and even though the price on the book went up later I still got it for $0.00.

Yes, Amazon always honors the price at which you order (and you can check that price at any time on the Manage My Kindle page). You do have to have a credit card on file when you place the order, but it is not charged (it seems to just be some lazy programming in place, since it if were not free, you would be charged at the time of fulfillment).

I have NEVER been charged for a $0.00 pre-order (and many were substantially more on release day, as I've grabbed up many a mispriced book this way).

IF the price goes DOWN between when you order and when it is released, you MAY get the lower price (but, it depends on if it is an Agency priced book or not); the lowest pre-order price guarantee that drops a price before delivery does not technically apply to Kindle ebooks (they are specifically not listed on the items that are covered and do not have the guarantee language on their product pages); however, Amazon does often give you the lowest price, if it goes down before the instant of delivery. With a pre-order, you can always cancel and re-order at the current price to lock in a lower price.

However, if the price is $0.00, it can't get any lower - lock it in (if you can; these are limited to those with australian addresses) and don't worry about it again.

The "worst" thing a publisher has done on a book I've pre-ordered this way is to either cancel the book (entirely, no one ever gets it) or delay it for decades. I've only had one or two do this, though.

Thank you both, crich70 and koland. Really helpful answers, good to know. I've had my kindle since Feb, but I'm just dipping my toe in to the world of kindle freebies and special offers!
