Sony cover with light: battery life?

The Sony cover with the built-in LED reading light is rated for about 19 hours of use with a single AAA alkaline battery. Have you found this estimate to be realistic? It seems too good to be true.

Is it ok to use NiMH batteries with LEDs? In the past I've burned out small conventional reading lights by using NiMH batteries instead of alkalines, and wonder if LEDs are also at risk of burning out with NiMH batteries.

It may be 19 hours before the battery completely dies or does not provide enough illumination to read by. I had a cover for my previous 600 and after about 12-13 hours the light would slowly get dimmer until it was un-usable to read by.

I've had my reader with lighted cover for six weeks now. Light in the cover is still going strong. I've used it quite a bit, but couldn't give a very accurate estimate of how many hours. Still, based on my experience 19 hours seems like a very reasonable estimate.

19 hours sounds about right. It is a single AAA battery, and I change it about once every 4 weeks or so.

When I toggled the light switch between low/high , I was unable to detect any difference in intensity between the two positions. I checked the battery voltage, using a digital multimeter, and found that it had dropped to 1.2V indicating that it should be replaced. So if you want to know whether your battery needs to be replaced, just toggle the light switch.
