I too voted for The Master and Margarita. Read On the Beach many, many years ago and didn't enjoy it much then.

I've read On the Beach. Very good book and well worth reading.

Of On the Beach, Stanley Kramer made a good movie (1959), maybe with better appeal than the book.

Of Nevil Shute, over On the Beach, I prefer the foilleton A Town Like Alice, that has indeed a saga like catching story. The problem with Nevil Shute is that he often was "slightly" propagandist, although a with a happy hand as a writer.

Actually addressing the list from the point of view books I have not read, or have read but would like to read again [in preference to a first read of any not yet read], The Master and Margarita does top my list. It is just not the book I would most like to discuss with other literary minded people here. No contradiction there. I have read Seven Japanese Tales so many times, cover to cover or just an individual story, that I need not read that to discuss it. So there you go.

As far as On the Beach (which I did read a long time ago) my opinion is that it is dated and of pulp fiction quality. Beppe is right in that there is the decent movie version out there to get the same story in, and in just over two hours.

I voted... for the underdog (Seven Japanese Tales). I didn't set out to vote for the underdog, it just so happened that way. All of the books this month are quite appealing to me, though!

In all fairness to me, I can enjoy happy books too. But with your comment I went back to check the books I've read this year to make sure. Phew! Some happy books there.
