Free/Bargain Science Fiction/Fantasy March 2013

(Okay, Apache-- here's a March thread )

In case anyone missed it last May when it was at this price, The Mongoliad: Book 1 , by Greg Bear, Neil Stphenson, etc., is $0.99 again at Amazon US
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007S0EF24

It sounds like this is a new edition since then, with some additional bonus material.

Quote:
With bonus material! This Kindle edition features extra content only found in the Collector’s Edition of The Mongoliad: Book One, including an illustrated character glossary, a Foreworld map, and Sinner, a prequel to the Mongoliad series.

The first novel to be released in The Foreworld Saga, The Mongoliad: Book One, is an epic-within-an-epic, taking place in 13th century. In it, a small band of warriors and mystics raise their swords to save Europe from a bloodthirsty Mongol invasion. Inspired by their leader (an elder of an order of warrior monks), they embark on a perilous journey and uncover the history of hidden knowledge and conflict among powerful secret societies that had been shaping world events for millennia.

Phoenix Pick's free book of the month is Robert Silverberg's Starborne
Here's the newsletter link, and follow the directions from there. (copy the code in the newlsetter.)
http://www.phoenixpick.com/newsletter/nx2013-03.htm

Quote:
Is utopia a death sentence for mankind?
Does living in a perfect world destroy all that makes us human?
Fifty men and women, living prefect lives, decide to give it all up to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
Equipped with enough genetic material to populate a new planet, these fifty set out to travel to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, with their only link to home a fragile telepathic bond between a blind crew member and her sister back home.

Starborne is a thoughtful, introspective look by one of the Grand Masters of science fiction at what it means to be human and to live a life of meaning.

If you are a fan of Silverberg's you can also buy his other two books we publish (The Masks of Time & Thebes of the Hundred Gates) for a 50% discount ($5.99 for both). Link to buy from the download page (no coupon required).
There was some discussion in last month's thread about code/format issues with Phoenix books. If you're sensitive to such problems, go with care. Personally, I'm grateful that PP regularly gives us nice reading material!

Gould's Impulse, Bova's Farside, Wright's The Hermit Millenia [Kindle US] $1.99

I suspect a pricing error at Tor.

Impulse
The third in Steven Gould's Jumper series (4th if you count Griffin's Story, the movie tie-in).

The Hermetic Millenia, the sequel to John C Wright's Count to a Trillion.

Farside
Loosely tied to Ben Bova's Moonrise series.

I don't know how long they will remain at this price at Amazon. All are very new books (I think February release), and I picked them up at B&N for $1.99 the other day, but they're all now $11.99 or $12.99 at B&N and Kobo. Since they're all from Tor, should be DRM-free though and convertable to ePub.

Note that Pheonix are also offering two other books by Silverberg at 45% off when bought together.

That's The Masks of Time and Thebes of the Hundred Gates for $5.99 the pair, from this link (which can be found at the download page for this months free offer).

Too good for me to resist this month.

Sorcery & Cecelia: or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot by Patricia C. Wrede & Caroline Stevermer is $2.99 right now at Amazon US. (Not at BN or Kobo as of this moment.) This is a YA Regency fantasy written in letters, with quite a devoted following.

Quote:
Since they were children, cousins Kate and Cecelia have been inseparable. But in 1817, as they approach adulthood, their families force them to spend a summer apart. As Cecelia fights boredom in her small country town, Kate visits London to mingle with the brightest lights of English society.

At the initiation of a powerful magician into the Royal College of Wizards, Kate finds herself alone with a mysterious witch who offers her a sip from a chocolate pot. When Kate refuses the drink, the chocolate burns through her dress and the witch disappears. It seems that strange forces are convening to destroy a beloved wizard, and only Kate and Cecelia can stop the plot. But for two girls who have to contend with the pressures of choosing dresses and beaux for their debuts, deadly magic is only one of their concerns.

Martha Wells' The Death of the Necromancer just became available self-published by the author for $2.99. This book was nominated for the Nebula in 1998. Amazon US BN Kobo

TDotN is the second book in a loose series starting with The Element of Fire (also $2.99 from these sites) a few generations earlier and continuing on to the Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy a generation later (still full priced from HarperCollins). TDotN stands on its own just fine if you're not a completist.

I've gotta say this blurb, while accurate, makes the book sound utterly paint-by-numbers.

Quote:
Nicholas Valiarde is a passionate, embittered nobleman with an enigmatic past. Consumed by thoughts of vengeance, he is consoled only by thoughts of the beautiful, dangerous Madeline. He is also the greatest thief in all of Ile-Rien. Under cover of darkness on the streets of the gaslit city, he assumes the guise of a master criminal, stealing jewels from wealthy nobles to finance his quest for vengeance: the murder of Count Montesq. Montesq orchestrated the wrongful execution of Nicholas's beloved godfather Edouard on false charges of necromancy, the art of divination through communion with spirits of the dead, a practice long outlawed in the kingdom of Ile-Rien.

But now Nicholas's murderous mission is being interrupted by a series of eerie, unexplainable, fatal events. Someone with tremendous magical powers is opposing him, and traces of a necromantic power that hasn't been used for centuries appear. And when a spiritualist unwittingly leads Nicholas to a decrepit old house, the truly monstrous nature of his peril finally emerges.
Two more of Wells' early works are also available at the same price; my favorite is probably The Wheel of the Infinite. An Amazon search brought up some unrelated stuff I couldn't get sorted well, but you can find them from TDotN as "also bought." BN price-sorted Kobo price-sorted

Because it's a lot easier to find in a thread like this. Also, we've had flooding of free/bargain eBooks in the past. This just makes it easier. Plus, with different threads based on book genre makes it easy to find what you like.

Ah. For me it's much easier to just skim the subject lines instead of having to open each post and read it looking for the specific thing I'm interested in. Plus the updates are at the top of the list, not the bottom where I've got to read through the whole post again to find where I left off. Thanks for the answer.

Mobileread will keep up with where you left off. Just click the arrow to the left of the thread title and it will take you to your first unread post. If you use Tapatalk, there's a setting that controls where it takes you which defaults to first unread.

Thanks. That tip just cut out about 10 pages I had to skim through to find where I left off in another thread.

And if it's a large # of ebooks on the same page like my post it's simpler to just link to the page itself than every separate book. Especially since some might stay free longer than others.

There is no rule that says one must post to this thread. However, as a Moderator and as a member here, I find it so much easier to just check the thread.
