My apologizes for misrepresenting your post. Let me get into the spirit of things and expand on my previous post...

Quote:
I liked a cover/case when eink ereaders didn't have front lights; I used the cover for a clipon light. I don't use, need, or want a cover/case.
For those who act like a Bull in a china shop, a case sounds like a good idea. Or for those who need a case because they fumble with their reader like a drunken sailor, a case may make sense.

And for the fools and their money who are soon parted, who am I to judge.

To quote a previous poster:

Quote:
Your ereader, your money, your choice no matter how foolhardy it may appear to be to me.
P.S. I don't mean to besmirch bulls or drunken sailors by equating them with apparently foolhardy people who need a case. Just an opinion, right?

No problem debating the pros and cons of a case, or stating why one prefers a case. Veiled name calling members foolhardy is worth fighting over. YMMV.

Sure. But it's still all fruit of the same dumb poisonous tree. The subject comes up all the time and it always devolves into fighting. State your (rhetorical, by the way) preferences/reasons and avoid responding to the inevitable taunts and impossible claims of universally applicable objective facts for once.

One of the reasons I like an e-reader is that it's lightweight and slim, so I don't use a case. I do, however, use a hand-strap; the one I've been using for years fits my kindle vertically or diagonally (which is how I use it) and has a finger-ring that slides along the hand-strap so it can be positioned in the perfect spot. Works well with either hand. I regularly fall asleep reading, and the finger-ring means I don't drop the kindle off the bed or into the bath. Good for travel too, as the kindle can be securely hanging off my finger while I hand over my passport. I do have a sleeve which lives inside my bag; when I'm putting the kindle in the bag, it's no more effort to put it in the sleeve, so it does have protection when out of the house but not being used.

All that said, I'm not someone who is hard on my devices, and my device is a Voyage, which I think is a bit more resilient than many other versions. My kids have PWs and they do have cases on their kindles.

Like so much in life, big-case/little-case/no-case - it depends on what works for you, based on your priorities, lifestyle, etc.

I'm afraid that if I adopted your method, I would end up with the hand-strap and finger-ring entangled around my neck and arms, much like my pug who tosses my (clean, but no longer used) 'holey' underwear into the air as he playfully wrestles with it when he sees me every morning. This eventually leads to a 'pug-of-war' [sic] as we both growl at each other.

You don't tithe your sacred underwear to textile recycling? (Which reminds me, I'm due a trip to the household waste recycling centre fairly soon.)

Veiled name calling? I did not see what I wrote as "veiled name calling". Please read and understand the difference between stating you are foolhardy and stating your behaviour seems foolhardy to me. One is making a statement about a person, the other is expressing my opinion of a person's behaviour. In not taking advantage of the extra protection offered by a case, 'disregard for danger or consequences' seemed about right for my opinion.

After the number of posts over the years about ereader displays being damaged—I remember a multitude of posts where "see the curved lines on the screen, they indicate a broken substrate" was written—it's hard for me to grok how people can defend not using a case. Much like wearing a seat belt while using a motor vehicle improves your chances of surviving an accident, using a case improves your ereader's chance of survival.

Simple. I prefer 7" and 8" screens, and a case makes such devices too heavy and uncomfortable to hold (for me). I'm nearsighted and read holding the ereader with one hand. Holding it on my lap or on a table while reading is out of the question.

People have posted similar preferences (along with other preferences) whenever this debate comes along.

And yet people can't seem to grok that other people have different preferences, needs, wants, etc.; not being able to grok this seems like a case of NPD*.

* Full disclosure, I am not a healthcare professional.

So you are stating that—in your opinion—I am suffering from narcissistic personality disorder.

That seems like a rather nasty personal insult.

Out of curiosity, how many people over your lifetime have you helped with decisions on, purchasing of, installation of and training on assistive technology equipment?
