In Windows You can 'Label' (name) your drives.
That adds the name to many of the paths shown in Explorer.

That's exactly what happened!

I always check, double check, and triple check to make sure I am working with the partition table on the drive I mean to be working on. So how did I "accidentally" wipe out the partition table on my boot drive? Lord only knows!

I didn't notice anything amiss during all my pre-checks to make sure I was where I wanted to be. Several minutes of "situation normal, proceed as planned" for that one. But then, within 0.047 milliseconds of applying the partition table changes, I realized exactly what I had done. Funny how that works!

How did you get the partition back without losing anything?

If you remember the partion order and sizes or start/stop blocks, or more likely, have a record of them, just repartition the disk without reformatting.

Live USB images are freely available. I miss the days when they could fit on a 50MB business card CD. (Just becauce there are multi-GB flash drives doesn't make them fast to boot.)

There is a Linux program named "testdisk". You can use this to recover from a deleted partition table. Doesn't matter if you run Windows, Linux, or whatever normally. You will be using Linux for this repair process.

You start out by booting your computer into Linux. You can do this by booting from a "Linux Live CD" or from a thumbdrive. You do NOT install Linux on your computer. You will need access to a second computer to create a bootable Linux thumbdrive or CD if you don't already have one of those laying around (and you SHOULD, even if you're a Windows user!)

Boot into Linux from your thumbdrive/CD and run the "testdisk" program. Rather than me detailing all the steps on how to use testdisk, I'll just point to a tutorial on partition table recovery I found with a quick Google search so I didn't have to type it all in myself in this post:

https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-recov...table-in-linux

Another important program for disaster recovery is named "photorec". By the name, you would think this is only for photo recovery. But it recovers a lot more than just photos.

I would recommend downloading and burning "System Rescue" to a CD (it might require a DVD to fit these days) or to a thumbdrive. System Rescue is a self contained Linux system that you boot from CD/DVD/thumbdrive. This is your key to fixing all kinds of computer disasters, even if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Windows user. "System Rescue" has all kinds of disaster recovery programs pre-installed. It is dedicated to system recovery, so you're not going to find word processors, video editors, and the like installed. But you will find most anything you would need to recovery from a computer disaster (even Windows disasters) except for the obvious "no recovery possible" scenarios - like your computer caught on fire and melted.

Well today I received an email that the contractor working on my property restoration after the fire Jan 1, 2024 has received the ok from the Safety Authority to have the gas reconnected, and they needed that done before the staircase could be installed.

I called the Gas company and have given them authorization to accept a call from the contractor to schedule a time.

So some progress but it's taking a LONG time.

While I am staying with friends less than 10 minutes away I don't like dropping by to see what is happening.

So I presume that the staircase is gas powered?

One place I lived in had a gas furnace in the attic. The gas pipe from the basement to the attic was run up underneath the stairs to the second floor and then into a closet and through it's ceiling into the attic. It helped that the underside of the stairs was not finished when that decision was made but you could see the pipes on the basement side and when they entered/exited the closet.

No. It's at the point where heat is required in the house.

The temperature of the wood must be stable when installing finished wood. Thus, the heat must be on for days while the wood comes to the 'normal' level or warps / buckles can happen.

Gosh, I just got involved in another disk disaster. Not mine this time ... a friends. His computer wouldn't boot. I booted it using a Linux Live-CD like I mentioned above. After a bit of snooping, I determined that he had no partition table on his HDD. What?! Me running into TWO partition table disasters in two weeks? That is completely unheard of! Yet here I was, staring at his useless disk. At least I know what happened to my partition table - I had deleted it myself like and idiot. His partition table, who knows what happened to it.

Well, at least I had recently refreshed my brains memory of how to use testdisk, so off I went. Testdisk was able to recreate a partition table based on what it found scanning the disk. Great! The exact outcome I was hoping for. After checking and re-checking I was doing what I wanted to be doing, I told testdisk to write my re-created partition table to my friends disk. "Write failure!" Oh no. His disk was on a death spiral down the toilet. Must be a bad sector where the partition table needs to go. Probably why it went AWOL in the first place, and why I couldn't re-write it using testdisk. Unfortunately my friends disk is old and uses MBR rather than GPT partitioning, so I couldn't make use of the multiple redundant copies of the partition table that GPT uses. MBR only has one copy.

Bummer.

But I was able to have testdisk use it's re-created partition table (in memory) as if it were the actual partition table on the disk, so I could see all my friends files. I was able to grab his files and get them copied over to a different disk. I breathed a sigh of relief after this. So did my friend, since he didn't have any backups. I'll bet he will going forward though!

Now that the files are safe on a different disk, I'm going to go do some playing around with his one-foot-in-the-grave disk. When you get one of these things that is now disposable you have the perfect opportunity to play with, test out, and fine tune your disk recovery skills. For one, I'm going to see if I can use the testdisk re-created MBR partition table and convert the disk to use GPT partitioning. I want to explore if that will allow me to place the GPT partition table in a differnt place on the disk - not the part with the (assumed) bad sectors. The primary MBR partition table has to go in one specific place on the disk - I think (emphasis on *think*) you have more leeway with GPT partition tables since there are several redundant copies of those on a GPT partitioned disk. Anyway, I don't really know, but with this newly available "disposable disk" I have a playground to test various recovery techniques out on.

Geez - two partition table disasters in two weeks! Who would have ever thought that could happen???!!! I have moved from vaguely remembering a program named "testdisk" into a "testdisk guru" in a very short time. I shouldn't say I'm all the way to guru status with it, but I'm a heckuva lot more knowledgeable about its capabilities and use than I was a few short weeks ago.

I kind of ran into the same sort of thing recently.

Somebody had an Onyx ereader that they accidentally wrote an update directly to the raw UFS unit starting at sector 0. After much effort we had (almost) everything back but it still wouldn't boot. My utilities that looked at the GPT were entirely happy, what could be wrong? Even with the correct GPT the PBL (ROM primary bootloader) wouldn't start without a valid protective MBR. Such a MBR is just a bit of boiler plate with the AA 55 and the raw disk dimensions of the maximum possible in MBR (which has nothing to do with the actual disk size). It's the same data for any GPT, 512 bytes of nonsense. It booted after that.
