Catalog Generation Error
In the last couple of days, I have suddenly had an error when trying to generate a catalog of my library in MOBI format. I am running Calibre v 0.8.58 on Windows 7 Pro x64 with 6gb RAM. I "think" it is a problem with the # of books (~7000) because I can generate a catalog of a library that only has ~425 books in it.
Here is the Error Message (I cut out the Titles, Genres, Chapters and other similar items to shorten the message): ================================ calibre, version 0.8.58 ERROR: Conversion Error: <b>Failed</b>: Generate catalog Generate catalog Sections: Authors, Titles, Series, Genres, Descriptions Catalog_EPUB_MOBI(): Generating mobi for kindle in GUI environment connected_device: 'None' book count: 7002 opts: authorClip: 60 catalog_title: u'_Catalog - 2012.06.30 - MOBI' connected_kindle: False descriptionClip: 100 exclude_book_marker: u':' exclude_genre: u'\\[.+]' exclude_tags: u'~,Catalog' header_note_source_field: '' merge_comments: '::True' output_profile: 'kindle' read_book_marker: u'tag:+' search_text: None sort_by: None sort_descriptions_by_author: True sync: False thumb_width: u'1.00' wishlist_tag: u'Wishlist' creating thumbnail archive, thumb_width: 1.00" Begin catalog source generation DPI = 168; thumbnail dimensions: 84 x 112 using default cover for ... 'MemoryError' is a strong clue.
Even if you could build a catalog that big, it wouldn't be very usable on a kindle, if it would even load. I'd suggest subdividing your library into smaller chunks for cataloging. G |

I would agree, but what is interesting, is that it worked with 100 lesss books without any issue at all.

You apparently found a breaking point.
I recall that when the catalog code was first released, someone built a working catalog with about 3500 books. It seems that you've set a new high-water mark. G |

I can't create a Mobi format one, though; that starts eating memory until it hits the 2GB process limit and blows up. |

I hadn't thought of trying EPUB... I switched to MOBI a couple of months ago to see how that worked, and didn't think about that being the issue. I'll give EPUB a try and see if that works.
Thanks, Eric |

Tried the EPUB and it worked. Thanks for the tip.
