What do you think the odds are that this method will continue to work in the future? Presumably now that Readium knows about the exploit you found, future versions of Thorium won't allow this anymore, but does Readium have any way to stop you from using an old version of Thorium, aside from releasing a new LCP 3.0 that doesn't work on old Thorium versions?

I don't have any 2.5 to test on. But, from my reading of the specification, 2.0 - 2.9 are all the same scheme, they just have different encryption keys.

If you have a 2.5 book, I'd love to know if my method works for you - https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2025/03/tow...rotected-epub/
is this possible to do on windows?

I don't know Readium's plans. I assume they'll try to lock down the debugging on future versions - but I've no idea how practical that is.

The current Thorium app works offline so should continue to work fine. That said, I don't know if their DRM has the concept of a "revocation list" which would allow them to cut off specific readers.

They are stupidly aggressive. Most other DRMs are rather easily removed and publishers still sell plenty of ebooks. I don't really understand how it is worth it going after the minority that removes DRM. thanks to you I extracted the 2 LCP ebooks I own and from now on I flat out refuse to buy LCP protected ebooks anymore because I like koreader way too much to give it up.

It harms legit customers more than pirates.

Ironically, I've often heard advice for hard-to-remove DRM to "just pirate it."

Yeah, I was trying to help someone out trying to transfer books from Google Play Books to a
Tolino and I was multiple times close to telling then to just pirate it.

Books form Google Play Books use Adobe DRM and can have the DRM renived with the DeDRM plugin.

What did you have to do in Windows to get it to work?

just used port 8315 and a different path to the correct directory to run debugging, the rest is the same!

first you use this to switch to the correct directory. just fix your username and location of your thorium, this is mine. if not sure, you can see the exact path if you view properties of the thorium icon on your desktop.
Code:
cd C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Programs\Thorium
then you run the executable with debugging enabled with this command
Code:
Thorium.exe --remote-debugging-port=8315 --remote-allow-origins=*
then you open your chrome or firefox and go here: http://localhost:8315/

I hope this helps!
