Congrats! Now your books are so accessible that they're impossible to read.

(As we all know, being able to customize fonts or margins is inaccessible and EVIL!)

All DRM is bad and I really dislike these readium fellows in particular due to their hiding behind "open source" and "accessibility". "If we're not doing it, somebody even worse would be in charge!" Yeah, I'm not buying it.
LCP makes eBooks inaccessible instead of more accessible.

If you switch a Tolino running the 5.x firmware to Kobo mode, it does in fact support LCP.

How many other ereaders/apps support LCP? Seems like Kobo could lose a lot of sales if they switch exclusively to LCP?

It still supports both DRM schemes. This is the same approach that the other vendors also take, Pocketbook, Tolino, they all support both DRM schemes.

I guess that's what they meant for "I agree there should be many more LCP-compliant apps and devices; one hundred is insufficient"

Because pay-per-view (or, in this case, read) is the ultimate goal of the big media companies. One of them even wanted to use cameras in smart TVs to count the number of people watching a show and charge per person.

Since Kobo already supports LCP DRM on their Tolino line of ereaders, that they would support LCP on their Kobo line of ereaders only makes sense given the Kobo seems to moving in the direction of a unified firmware base for both.

To quote from the EDR Labs website:
Quote:
tolino is the leading ebook retailer in Germany. The company has made tolino e-readers (now developed by Rakuten Kobo) LCP-compliant since 2019, and has added LCP to its bookselling service in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Looking at a tolino, it appears that their proprietary renderer is used for LCP while the Adobe RMSDK renderer is used for Adobe's ADEPT DRM. Oddly similar to the current Kobo setup where RMSDK uses Adobe DRM while their WebKit based renderer uses Kobo's proprietary DRM.

BTW, for a list of who supports LCP, I would suggest EDR Labs
Globally available reading systems for information.

Interesting. I wonder if that means Kobo will add Thorium on top of WebKit and RMSDK in a future firmware version.

Not very likely, IMNSHO. The renderer used in Tolino labelled devices already handles LCP and is the likely the base for Kobo's renderer to be used in future Kobo firmware. I would suspect that it will replace the current Kobo renderer for non-DRM, LCP and Kobo DRMmed ePubs with RMSDK being used for Adobe ADEPT DRMmed ePubs to keep things compatible for library loans, etc.

With this opinion and a few dollars, you can get a Starbuck's coffee.

Oh, right. I forgot that Tolino wasn't using WebKit anymore, so Kobo is probably going to deprecate it, too.

I'm surprised they got LCP working. Must have been high on their list of priorities. Basic features like font weight settings and hyperlinks in epubs have been broken for months..

Oddly, I haven't seen issues with font weight settings when the font is correctly structured and named. As for hyperlinks in ePubs? Considering the limitations of the current browser, not all that surprising.

As getting LCP working? Kobo did that 5 years ago since tolino ereaders are mostly sold in areas where the libraries were switching to LCP. Considering how few libraries outside of continental Europe are using LCP, not a high priority item for the Kobo branded firmware.
