Free (Kindle) Deluge! by John Russell Fearn [Water Usage Resource Dispute Western]
Deluge! by the late prolific multi-genre British author John Russell Fearn (ISFDB, SFE) is his vintage standalone western historical action adventure novel, this tale starring a wandering mining engineer who finds a night's shelter with a kindly old rancher (with the requisite beautiful daughter) whose property is suffering from a lack of water supply, apparently the work of a ruthless neighbouring landowner, whose sabotage the engineer takes it upon himself to remedy, no matter what the cost, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Pioneering imprint.
This was originally published in 1949 by Muir-Watson under the title Gunsmoke Valley, and was later reprinted by Robert Hale as part of their Black Horse Western under its current title using the pseudonym Arnold Ryden. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else worldwide that Amazon sells, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive or else program) Description There can only be one winner… Jeff Alroyd, a restless mining engineer, and the son of a renowned poker player, rides into Double Peak Valley seeking shelter for the night. He stumbles upon the hospitality of Morton Kemp, an old cattle farmer, and his daughter Babs, who are living on a once-thriving, but now parched and dying ranch. He soon finds himself caught up in the flood of sabotage, threats, kidnap and even murder, as adjoining landowner “Poker” Barrow plays dirty. Alroyd quickly determines to help Babs and her father reclaim their vital water supply, to rescue the farm and win Babs’ heart into the bargain. But can an ‘Act of God’ be undone? And will Alroyd beat Barrow at his own game? The stakes are higher than ever! Is it all worth the gamble? Deluge! is the story of one man’s life-and-death struggle. A dramatic tale of justice that will grip readers from the first page until the final, unexpected conclusion. |
