Hi!
My PW2 has been jail broken, and recently I noticed that 5.4.3 for pw2 was released. So my question is: 1) Can I update this firmware on a jail-broken device? 2) If I don't want to upgrade, will this firmware download automatically on a jail-broken device? 3) Can I use the firmware to recover my device if I don't want it jail broken? 4) Can I use the firmware to de-brick my device if it turned to a brick? For your convenience, the software update link is here ![]() |

@lesca-
1) Yes 2) Yes. However, after Jailbreaking there is a hack (BackDoorLock) that will prevent silent or unwanted updates. With this hack in place, you can still side-load via USB any update and install it...point is that whether to update or not becomes your decision. 3) The JailBreak is just a certificate that allows the device to recognize software bin files beyond Amazon's official ones. It can be removed, but there is really no reason to, it causes no isssues. The directions for it's removal are included in the download of the Jailbreak. 4) There are many forms of 'bricks'. ixtab has provided a 'RescuePack' hack that aids in the repair of your Kindle if it does become 'bricked' (helps get it into a Diags mode so that you have access to try to fix it). But I think what you are asking is if you can just run an official firmware update bin to unbrick a kindle PW2, the answer is a resounding no. If anyone sees inaccuracies in my comments, please chime in... Other questions of this kind might be better posted in the Developer's Corner subforum. Cheers! ![]() |

Thanks @GoSharks, you really helped a lot!
But I still wonder if I installed the update on a jail broken device, will the hacks still work? And If I did a lot of hacks on my kindle is there a easy way to restore it to the factory default, so I can try something new like duokan or something else. |

@lesca-
You will need to reinstall your hacks after an update. If you use KUAL, you will need to reinstall the MKK (Kindlet Kit) for it to work again. The Jailbreak so far seems to survive the updates. I have never used duokan so can't comment on how 'clean' your PW needs to be beforehand. Doing a 'restore to factory' pretty much will wipe clean everything (including the Jailbreak I think) Last edited by GoSharks; 03-10-2014 at 01:13 AM. |

No, a Factory Reset has no effect on a Jailbreak.

Factory Reset wipes the userstore only.
Many hacks install files in the system partition as well. |

I knew we would get some more input if I kept talking! ![]() There you have it, as dsmid pointed out you would need to run the individual uninstall files for your hacks and the jailbreak before doing the factory reset. @dsmid- Question: I know that an update renders most hacks inoperative and they need to be re-installed--> Does an update clear the hacks completely or are there pieces remaining? |

Moved to the dev forum. That is the place where you're going to get these questions answered.

@GoSharks: Depending on the hacks, you might get some pieces left besides what's on the USB root, but nothing a factory reset won't clear for good.

Thank you all for your comments.
The reason I don't like the "uninstall" way is there are so many packages I have installed so if I want it unhacked, I have to run every uninstall bin for every hack sequentially. While I cannot make sure I would uninstalled them in the right order. And there, I think, is no promise that the un-installation will clean everything.(For example, I installed HackA-1.0-install.bin before, and uninstalled with HackA-2.0-uninstall.bin after several months.) So I guess the best way is to use a clean firmware. But till now, I see no such method to do this job. Suppose one could restore his/her device to the real factory status, they would have no worries about doing the hacks. |

@lesca, you can do factory reset + reinstall the firmware update.
That should wipe everything (maybe with the exception of jailbreak). |

(There may be exceptions to that, but I can't think of any at the moment.) There will be some things left behind by the "uninstall" processes - this is by design. A "factory reset" will clear those. - - - - Even easier, re-install the image backup files you made before you installed the first of a massive number of hacks. You did of course make one of those device image backups, correct? |

When I update my pw2, I will follow these step. Correct me not to brick because giving back to amazon is really impossible in my country.
1. Format rest my pw2 (FW 5.4.2.1) due to all clear of my installed file such as duoken and other. 2. Update my pw2 (FW 5.4.3) 3. reinstall jailbreak 4. install MKK 5. install KUAL 6. Install duoken 7. Install kindle menu 8. and other game files such as IF games... It is a corrected method for not bricking. Thanks Last edited by Divion; 03-13-2014 at 12:54 AM. |

Perhaps that has changed. But if you remove step (6) from your list - you will not brick your device (if all of the games are also from MR). |

@knc1
With ur recommand, i should not install Duoken? But i love it. All application and game are from Mobileread. How to reinstall Duoken in my going to update pw2? Actually, i like FW 5.4.3 with power off feature. If i can power off my pw2 in some way, i will not update it. Do u have some way to power off? I am not a programmer, developer, so i cannot do what i want. Power feature is useful in my country which do not have guarrented electricity. When the battery is below 10 % , if i do not find power source or power off mine it is a big trouble. Thanks. |
