Sony considers bringing electronic readers to Australia

It seems that the rumours discussed a while back may be true!

Quote:
SONY is considering bringing its range of electronic readers to Australia after last week's unveiling of the Apple iPad.

"We're looking at our options," said Paul Colley, technology communications manager at Sony Australia, at a product showcase today.

"We know it’s a space that's growing. It's been very successful in the US and Europe," he said.

They have left their run a little to late to launch in Aus. To have ignored the market here for four years whilst other devices such as Irex, Bookeen, The hanlin clones and now hte kindle have been establishing their market here has been more than a little shortsighted.

A pity Sony is so far behind the game Down Under. From what I've seen, their devices would be ideal for use in Australia -- sad for them that others had more faith in and respect for Oz and got in there first. Neil

The problem is that big players aren't able to make any money in the e-book market in Oz the way things stand at the moment (parallel import business).
There's a good article in SMH by Rob Carr (the former NSW premier currently sitting on the board of Dymocks) discussing this issue.
Quote:
"The arrival of these devices shows how short-sighted publishers were to keep book prices high in Australia ... they shot themselves in the foot," said Carr, who sits on the board of Dymocks, in a phone interview.

"The Federal Government will have to sooner rather than later lift the ban on parallel importation because of the competition to traditional books now being provided by these technologies."
I think unless somebody puts a rocket under our collective back-sides, we'll seriously left behind.
