When an obvious swindler phones you 9:00 a.m.
(A foreign number, the speaker was wailing in Russian about being in a hospital before I interrupted her. I have no Russian-speaking friends or relatives who would phone me of all people if they were hospitalized for some reason. And when I asked who was speaking, in Estonian, she hung up. She was a pretty good actor, though. The wailing sounded genuine. I guess there's a remote chance they just got the wrong number...) |

Well, give me your number. I'll call you if I get hospitalized.

Went to grocery store, you'd think it'd be closed for two weeks instead of two days. Busy.
One full cart cut me off in line. I had five items. They could've waited. Someone ran over and snatched the last small cart (trolley to some of you) almost out of my hand too and I had to use big one that was hard for me to push or steer. Someone older than me (same with the line-cutter). And they say younger generations are entitled? Last edited by ownedbycats; 04-19-2025 at 09:36 AM. |

The stores here were/will be closed Friday, Sunday, Monday.
I knew that it would be a zoo here today so I went to the supermarket at 6 AM near the trains station (which is actually open all those days anyway). It was astoundingly pleasant. I'm going to adopt that into my regular routine. I hate carts. I like trolleys a bit better because they sound like more fun. I don't like using a basket either. Shopping for one and not being particular I just grab a few items. Today was a big pot of turkey soup with root vegetables. |

One of the items I picked up was 2 litres of milk. Another was 2 litres of diet cola (sugar and caffeine-free, shh). And a box of cat food cans.
Can't exactly carry all in one hand while the other one's holding the cane. ![]() |

At start of C19 pandemic some H&S bright spark decided the best time for old people to buy their groceries was between 6:30 and 8.00 in the morning
![]() Best time to shop is mid-morning, with Mums & their toddlers… they know what they want, where things are, and their children are fun to watch. And they use the DIY checkouts, which leaves the staffed checkouts free for people like me. |

IIUC, the point of letting the elderly in to shop first thing in the morning during the pandemic was to give them a chance to by the staples that would sell out quickly due to panic buying and hoarding.

I have unfond memories of the start of the lockdown before they limited quantities. When my spouse and I went to Costco to pick up some items. I placed one package of toilet paper in our shopping buggy and then watched one 'family' with multiple flat decks load up 90% of the rest. I did get a chuckle out of that when Costco changed their policy to no returns on items that hoarders had purchased and one acquaintance mentioned that one 'family' tried to return about $10,000 worth of TP, rice, etc. that they found themselves unable to sell at a profit and were told that they could not be returned. |

That's funny because I find elderly people to be universally much much pushier than younger folks in the stores. More likely to block the aisles talking too.

Ok, occasionally I am out and out stupid, but usually I try to maintain 360 degree radar.
I sense people and try to make way for them. At checkouts, I move quickly out of the way usually with my backpack mounted in front with things hanging out and half a dozen things in my hands. I like supermarkets that have "staging areas" after the checkouts. Some have recycling there so you can get rid of the cardboard box that your corn flakes came in. |
