Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Generation Software Updates

We have a new, free software update available for your Kindle Paperwhite 2nd Generation. This update automatically downloads and installs on your Kindle Paperwhite when connected wirelessly; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

The software update includes general improvements and the following new features:

Kindle FreeTime
FreeTime lets you create personalized profiles for kids, and give them access to titles from your collection of books. Kids can keep track of their personal reading progress and earn achievement badges. To learn more, go to Kindle FreeTime.

Goodreads on Kindle
Connect with the world's largest community for readers from your Kindle Paperwhite. See what your friends are reading, share notes, and rate the books you read. To learn more, go to Find and Share Books with Goodreads on Kindle.

Cloud Collections
Use Cloud Collections to organize titles in custom categories and store your collections in the Cloud. To learn more, go to Organize Your Content with Cloud Collections.

Does anyone know if it fixes the Cloud Collections debacle?

Does Kual , Koreader and other add-ins still work now?
If not,can we reinstall them and make them work properly?

Hmm, very interesting. I can actually click on a link from Amazon's software update page that says Download Software Update 5.4.2.1 but as I've duplicated here, it offers up the old 5.4.2 firmware.

And if you try manually creating the link (all Kindle software updates come from the same folder but with a different firmware number) you get an error: http://s3.amazonaws.com/G7G_Firmware...le_5.4.2.1.bin

The name of a file has not changed - update_kindle_5.4.2.bin is actually 5.4.2.1...

Per a user on Kindleboards, no visible change to Collections or Goodreads support versus 5.4.2. She's not jailbroken, so no word on compatibility with either JB or the tweaks many of us use.

I won't have time to check it out until later tonight, but it's still a full update, so at the very least it will wipe stuff.

My findings so far, in no particular order:

- This is indeed a different FW version. What is pretty nasty from Amazon's part is that by making it available at the same URL as the old version, they seem to want to make the original 5.4.2 firmware disappear.

- at least when directly updated from a jailbroken 5.4.2, the jailbreak survives.

- the jailbreak also seems to work for this version.

- this version cannot easily be downgraded to the original 5.4.2. This may be a side effect of Amazon simply having replaced the 5.4.2 .bin, or there could be another reason. I don't know.

So if you have the 5.4.2 bin saved, it "cannot be easily downgraded"?

Nope. The upgrade button will remain grayed out if you are on 5.4.2.1 and try to install the "original" 5.4.2 .bin

Just a thought -
Could we modify the version indicators of the installed system to indicate 5.4.0 installed?

Then it might take either 5.4.2 or 5.4.2.1 install packages.

@NiLuJe: It's the issue of book covers not appearing in the cover view mode of the PW2. It happens to all ebooks in the azw3 format after they're converted from epub.
