That's the same for me as well. Even reading outdoors, you're sometimes half shade/half sun, or a breezy day making trees move causes a constant change between sun/shade, so leaving the light on even outside works very well for me. I've got really bad eyes all my life, very farsighted, astigmatism, and my eyes never tire or hurt from the front light on ereaders.

Dont worry. I think This Led is safer then your living room lights.

Screen is using diffrent tech than the tablet screens.

@zm, are you preventing your kids from using a cell phone or a tablet since the brightness can be turned up and it's always back lit with no way to turn it off?

Yes, they don't have any access to a phone or tablet when they're alone in their room on the evening. They can play with LEGO, read books, read with the ereader, draw, or whatever they want etc.

But letting a 8 or 9-year old kid with a full internet device without an eye from a parent, after 7 pm is really something we don't want at home. I know I'm probably old-fashioned, but I accept that

Another reason why e-ink readers are better for reading. While they may have simple browsers, they are pretty much worthless for any real browsing.

After 7 PM? Near as I can tell, the dark side of the Internet is accessible 24/7.

Don't open your Kobo or you'll void the warranty.

There is a solution that works. Go to Settings > Reading settings and uncheck Swipe left edge to adjust brightness.

When the light is off on a Kobo, it's truly off. Just don't turn on the light.

Yes. Absolutely to all of that!

Tested about 7 Kobo models. No issues with turning off light completely.

Thank you! My Kobo Libra will be delivered today so that's very useful info. I'm happy to hear that the light can be permanently turned off this way.
