ASUS eBOOK reader 2010 on CeBIT

ASUS introduced eBook reader with touch color screen that will be available in 2010 on CeBIT Expo in Germany. You can read "Don't touch"
label on the picture.
I tried touch it but nothing happened - It was just prototype...

Panasonic tried a two-screen device, didn't seem to work too well.

I assume this is not a reflective screen, but backlit?

(I also don't get the 2 page thing, but maybe for for some it'd be useful.)

Then it's a double tablet/netbook?

Then I am actually more curious to see what Apple will bring in Q3 with these 10" screens it just ordered.

But neither is reflective, thus to my eyes, not great for extensive reading.

this will mainly be a Niche computer. it will have to be capacitive, and have a custom OS, or custom interface no OS currently would work with this type of device as is very well.

a few simple compatabilty programs will make this really cool.

yes, it looks like double tablet/netbook but they introduced it as e-book reader

apple 10" screen unit:

Rumors continue to swirl around whatever(if anything) Apple is building. Reports are that Apple has ordered 10-inch touchscreens from Taiwan. That part is looking more like fact. So the question is, will those screens end up in a netbook?

Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun-Times has a slightly different and interesting theory about the device. He thinks it might be an ebook. Which makes more sense as the only real competitor they would have is Amazon

From Asustek Vows to Out-Apple Apple
Quote:
The company has polished off an e-book reader and a video game system to rival the Wii as well. Asustek, however, has yet to release either product because it’s struggling to hammer out content deals.
I assume their e-book reader is like the dual screen prototype. Its an interesting idea if done right, since the folded device protects the screen and is compact for travelling.

Am I the only one that thinks a dual screen is a bit dumb? The cool thing about an ebook reader is that its just one piece. Why add a second screen, not sure why you would need that as you can't read two pages at a time unless you have some really cool speed reading technique where you split your reading between your left and right eyes. All that adds is extra weight and the battery will drain twice as fast. It will be uncomfortable to hold as you can't hold it with one hand at that point so it takes the worst feature of having a book and adds it to an electronic device

Trying to out-Apple Apple is just going to drive them bankrupt wasting CapEx on devices that they can't release (yea what we need is another video game system, who are the game designers that are on board? Just stop it they should start trying to make a new smart phone operating system while they are at it, maybe even some flavored water to diversify their business). The eBook reader, at least the one they showed there is awful. I'm glad they are thinking outside the box but their revolutionary devices are giving me that odd feeling of the "cars from the future" that they had in the 50s, those cars stayed "in the future". What they should do instead is start rolling up their sleeves to get those Pixel Qi screens in their devices sometime this fall. Rip off one of those screens and give me a tablet like that with 10 hrs batter life and then we're talking, until then all they are getting is my voicemail

Is this the Asus eBook?

An Asus exec has let slip some intriguing tech titbits in a recent interview, including the news that Asus has its own eBook ready to ship and join the increasingly crowded market dominated by Amazon and Sony. But could he have been talking about the dual screen device we saw back at CeBIT?

In an interview with the New York Times, Asus vice chairman Jonathan Tsang said that the company was sitting on an Asus eBook device, as well as a games machine “better than the Wii”, but has yet to release either while it fleshes out content deals.

The eBook market is already bursting with gadgets: the Kindle does 3G, Fujitsu is working on colour eInk displays and Sony has worldwide reach with the Sony Reader. We think this could be a way for Asus to stand out - it said at the time that the dual panel laptop would include an eBook mode to flick through pages with multitouch, which would certainly be smoother than having to wait for an eInk screen to refresh.

There’s no confirmation, but we wouldn’t rule out Asus selling the dual screen laptop as a dedicated eBook device. It might drain battery juice quicker than your average eBook, but two virtual pages are better than one, no?

Why? As was already stated, you can't read two pages at once. 2 pages on a real book makes sense because it takes no energy to display. But why in the world would you want to drain the battery twice as fast for absolutely no benefit? I could see this working with e-ink technology but for an LCD it's just a complete waste.

I agree that it would be a waste in a LCD application. However, give me a dual screened eInk device that is lighter than your average pbook and I would love to have it. It would be great if it held and felt like a pbook and if you throw in touch screen page turning, man it would just be the greatest gadget ever. And think of all the looks it would attract.

I suppose you could make the second screen a touchscreen. Here are a few uses I thought about.

  1. Keyboard - Lay it up like a laptop, and have the touchscreen show a keyboard layout. This will allow you to easily edit your books, or even to write your own, and save them to the SD card or internal memory.

  2. Notes - One the left side is the school textbook. The right touchscreen will have handwriting recognition and allow you to take notes during class. When you change the left screen to a new page, it saves the handwritten/converted text and creates a new blank page for you to start a new set of notes on. This way, a book with 120 pages will have a matching 120 pages of possible notes.

  3. Menus - The right touchscreen will have easily-accessible menus so that you can quickly change folders, view-settings, font size, font type, without having to leave the book you are reading. This layout could be customized. It will also allow you to have a list of bookmarked links along one edge. This will allow you to quickly bookmark any number of pages and jump back and forth between them, possibly between several books.

Can you imagine how much simple D&D gaming would be? 10 bookmarks, for example, which allow you to quickly jump from your adventure notes, to a Monster Manual entry, to the DMG treasure table, to the PH Spell list, etc.. Making a DMs job much easier than having pbooks!

Why not two half-pages (rotate 90 degrees)? Such a design would give us the best of two worlds, big screen when in use, small package for transport.
