One more prove that printing is a lot more expensive than e-thing and ebooks prices are overprices deliberately by greedy publishers.

We *know* this despite the unconvincing attempts of various interested parties to prove otherwise. If the content/editing/ was the major cost, the model of 25$ hc priced 3 times higher than original mmpb would not make sense, since the cost is the same for content/editing for a mmpb and for a hc.

And again I talk about *original* mmpb which do quite a lucrative business, so the argument that mmpb are a second edition so in hc you pay for time-value is moot...

Ebook prices are high because the industry is geared towards that, not because of intrinsic costs. Only powerful external factors will bring them down, the way p2p brought music prices down

I think he's stretching it a bit. The number of subscribers in his figures are only those that have been subscribed for two years or more. I would like to know what percentage of the total sales that is.

We did have a publisher in another thread say that his printing costs were about 40¢ per book. But, he neglected to mention the distribution and pulping loss costs. I asked about it but there was no reply.

And there's the disposal costs too of paper products....even though much paper is biodegradable, electronic media doesn't cost anything to dispose of....delete, click, gone!

However, electronic devices do have a real disposal cost. There have been quite a few debates about how much use you need to get out of a reading device before you break even, ecologically speaking.

Kindle is going to help a lot of companies I think. It is the way to read for the 21st century...

I posted this article earlier in the week. It measures some of the ecological aspects of ebooks vs pbooks.

Maybe, maybe not.

First, this would cut off ALL NYT newstand revenue. Which I'm sure figures into ad revenue.

Also, the NYT would be placing their eggs in the Kindle basket. That's asking a lot in a lousy economy and digital downloaded content has a shaky history with providers. What if Amazon abandons the Kindle in a year, 2 years?

Frankly, if they do consider this, Amazon should pay the NYT. 800k+ new potential customers to sell eBooks to.

I heard a related story on NPR this morning. The state of Oregon has become the first state to require electronics manufacturers pay for recycling of TVs, computers and other e-waste.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...ryId=100131277

I think it's a good idea to make these costs explicit for ALL products.

There are 4 Canadian provinces who collect eco fees from the consumer. The fees are listed here.<--link

That was a stupid place to attach a recycling fee. It should be attached to the sale, not the manufacture of the device.

Why is this better? Who would then pay for getting rid of unsold devices?
