Hello from Canada (Quebec)
Hi all!
I am a ship's Captain from Canada. I read a lot, but it is not always easy to have access to books. ebooks make a lot of sens to me... Recently I went to the USA and saw the Sony PRS-505 (Not sold in Canada) but I was very disappointed because their e-Connect do not accept credit card from any other country than USA... I travelled all over the word with my credit card, but Sony USA does not seem to like it... Yesterday great news ! The Kindle!!! It is all over the amazon.com website, but nothing on the amazon.ca (Canadian website) website... Maybe somebody will let me buy a Cybook Gen3!!! Regards to all! Captaingeorges Hope you can help me!!! |

Welcome fellow Canuck.
I was in the same boat (so to speak) and recently purchased the Cybook and have been really happy with it. There's been rumours about Sony releasing the PRS-505 in Canada but nothing yet. I suspect that our government red tape has something to do with it but that's just speculation. Enjoy the forum. |

Kindle Not in Canada
I received today an official reply from Amazon that you need a US credit card and an US address to buy the Kindle...
Too bad! I will start looking at the Cybook more closely |

Hé salut! Bienvenue a bord Capitaine!
If you speak french we have an itty bitty forum, look it up. You'll find info on a lot of book sites there. Depending on where you live you can cross the border to Burlington VT and buy a Sony there or you can order online from numerous sources |

Next time you visit the States try to buy gift vouchers for Connect, you can use those over internet. Leaping Gnome can also help you acquire them, he occasionnally writes here.

Looking for Leaping Gnome
Hi all you fellow Sony PRS 505 users. I am sooooo new to forums, but found this one while trying to get info on Sony's digital reader. I ordered mine on Monday, received it today (Wednesday) and am anxious to get reading. I know of the problems we Canadians are having with the Connect store and am desperately seeking Leaping Gnome. Anyone know how I can email him -- otherwise I may just have to consider moving to the US of A to get my fill of reading material!!! Thanks to anyone who can help.

Bonjour captaingeorges!
Yes, it is very frustrating being a Canadian - so close and yet so far from having access to the full selection of ebooks our American neighbours enjoy. I very successfully purchased a Sony PRS-505 thru Ebay, THRILLED when it arrived, but VERY frustrated when stonewalled by Sony's website from ordering eBooks. I emailed Sony, and received (quickly) an email telling me they have no current plans to make their eBooks available to Canadians, but I have lots of options from free websites, of which they included a short list. Yeah, thanks, but I'd like access to a variety like Amazon offers for it's Kindle (tried buying one of those when they were released, when I met my first rejection as a Canadian who just wanted to buy an electronic reader and ebooks). But, I don't give up easily either, so I'll just get a few of those Sony gift cards so that I can load up for our upcoming vacation, someway, somehow. On an aside - do you sail the Great Lakes? Our business does refrigeration & air conditioning repairs on board several of the lakers. Great people to work for, and an industry I grew up with. Regards, Peggy |

I have almost given up on the Sony, I am leaning more towards the Cybook.
Yes I do sail the Great Lakes and St-Lawrence. I am a captain for ULS out of Toronto. Regards, |

What a small world it is then, captaingeorges, as ULS is a treasured customer! Best of luck finding your reader, and I'm grateful to have found this community as it is the best source of information and help we could hope for.
What an amazing way to meet people from all over the world, and in this case, much closer to your world! Regards, Peggy |

Wonderful dogs (kids with tails) too! And miniature horses! How do they get along? You must miss them when sailing.
Clare Moore Refrigeration is our business, the C/E will most certainly know of us, hopefully we keep you cool and comfortable Have you been able to source a reader? A bit challenging for the delivery if you're sailing, but one of these devices will be perfect for you, especially when you can download books while sailing. We just got an aircard for the business, and it is going to be so beneficial for travelling - unbelievable speed, thanks to all the kids who want to download video etc to their phones. Purchase price through Telus was $50, we're on a $40/month plan, but there is a $75/month unlimited plan. Exploring that to replace our unreliable $170/month system that services the shop. How is your internet service on board? I hope to devote a bit of time this wknd to finding some books for my Sony reader, would like to find "beach" reads, but a Sony gift card could take care of that... there's a Christmas gift challenge for my family! Regards, Peggy |

An excellent choice. Both the Sony Reader and CyBook Gen3 are fine machine, but my personal preference is for the Gen3, due to the Mobi format is supports having multi-platform support, and because of its very nice dictionary lookup facility which the Sony lacks.
