readOyster.com: "Netflix for books"

http://www.readoyster.com/ is taking sign-ups for e-mail notification of events. Evidently it's a start-up aiming to do for reading what Netflix does for movies and TV. They just got the first round of start-up funding. I searched here but didn't see any threads on it.

I'd sign up if the pricing is right. I find it hard to believe that major publishers would support this, at any sane pricing levels.

Sounds interesting, but not convinced there'll be enough range

Hmm, even with the Netflix business model it will be hard to compete in ebook market nowadays.

Call me when they have some publishers on board. Anybody can say they're going to do this.

Since I read primarily in one or two genres (scifi and fantasy) they would have to have a lot of titles in their inventory before I would find this useful.

Now if Baen Books were to offer unlimited reading for the price I am paying for Netflix, I would jump at it.

Wouldn't we all. Lucky for me the library offers it for less. I enjoy at least 80% of the library books I get and could probably choke down the others if they ran out of available books.

I have trouble imagining a subscription service paying for itself with major content. The big publishers have shown a lot more interest in protecting the perceived value of their ebooks than in making them available to readers for less.

An iPhone app? Yeah, I dunno. If you could download the books to an ereader it might be worth it, but I don't like reading books off an LCD screen. I'll just stick with the library for now.
