And if you say went on a trip to another country and bought the device at some local brick and mortar shop then you should be able to get a tax return at the border.

why don't you try it through companies like USunlocked?
you buy a DR800SG for $443 incl tax = €357 + 23%VAT= €439
now the only extra costs are the shipping from the States, but that's calculated over the US price, without your VAT.
cool calculation, right?

a lot of people do it like that. I bought a couple when I went there for a long weekend.

tried with shipito, but BestBuy won't ship to known freight forwarders... but I've solved the problem in the meantime - found a German retailer that sold it without the EU VAT (i.e. it cost me 415€ + 30€ shipping + Croatian VAT) - it's in the customs right now, I should be able to pick it up this week
