Depends. A few years ago I had a copy of my calibre library on a flash drive which I occasionally took with me when I left home. If I had lost it, someone could have found it and uploaded the books to a pirate site, with (possibly) my information in them. Back then I too was interested in removing personal information from my books. But in the end I never bothered, and ditched the flash drive altogether.

If you're using Calibre server open to the internet, put a password on it. Will keep people from swiping files from those.

With Veracrypt you can make a large file into a virtual harddrive. On this virtual harddrive I have all my ebooks and other stuff that I consider private. When you start your computer you will have to mount the virtual drive and specify a password. The login method can be made quite secure. A thief will not be able to access your secret stuff. Why would you care? That ebook is only for your personal use. You are cheating the author if you upload it.

If anyone is afraid of eBooks getting out there if the Reader or Computer is stolen, don't by any without DRM and don't remove the DRM from ones that have it.

I thought the way DRM works is that the key is on the computer and the tools can extract the key and then the DRM can be removed.

But if the computer is stolen and there are no tools on it to remove the DRM, then there may be a good chance that the thief won't be able to remove the DRM. So if you are afraid, but only eBooks with DRM and have no tools for removing the DRM.

It's nice to get a straight answer instead of a lecture. Thank you.
Just FYI, if anyone gets free books from reader magnets or ARCs, you should edit the book and search for ID info such as @ (for email addresses) and so on. |
