Thanks Matthias. All references I have seen show only six. The Gutenberg USA edition, which I used as source, and has the illustrations, has six. All were published in Cassells in 1897, the first edition book came out during 1898.
"Emu Plains" was a one-off for the 1898 Christmas edition of Cassells Magazine and didn't have the solution, with an invitation to the readers to supply one. The authors provided the solution in April 1899, so it couldn't make it into the first edition. Your edition must be later. Another John Bell story appeared in 1928! "The Chamber of Terror". I haven't see that story anywhere. I'll put "Emu Plains" in the next Past Masters, also "Chamber", if I can find it somewhere. Thanks again Terry |
