Kobo Wifi bookmark help

From the Kobo user guide:" 13. Share books with other Kobo apps:" "Kobo keeps track of your bookmarks so that you can pick up where you left off in each of your books."

and in "Share books and bookmarks between devices" it says "if you use one of the free kobo apps for tablets and smartphones, these will automatically update your library when you launch and close them".

THIS is not happening for me. I update the desktop app, connect the kobo (I'm trying to see how the battery does if I don't use wifi) and sync. The desktop app is not now showing the book I am currently reading as the most recent opened (it was) nor does it show my current page. Needless to say, the kobo ereader is not either after syncing. I was reading on my iphone and it won't update my bookmarks. It is very frustrating.

Understand your frustration. During beta testing I saw the same thing. Some days bookmarks would synchronize perfectly, others it was a total mess.

Now that the beta is behind, I went back to using pure EPUBs as I find kobo's ultra-wide line spacing annoying. I just always finish reading on a chapter end and make a mental note of the chapter number when switching devices.

Yes, I'm trying to develop a habit of noting the chapter when I stop reading. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I exclusively use the Kobo desktop app and a single KOBO ereader and it's still frustrating. I can't imagine having multiple devices and hoping that it would keep track.

I love the Kobo reader, and the application is great, except for the bookmarks. When I buy a new book, then update the app library, and then sync my reader, it's a dogs breakfast most of the time.

It requires that I have to systematically clear all the incorrect bookmarks of the books I've already read, plus move them out of I'm reading to the finished section, and then some books show as new that use to show finished, etc, etc. It's a crap shoot for sure.

I still use it, but I agree that it's frustrating. Kobo should take a real hard look at rewriting that app, because I've never yet read a post where someone thinks it works fine.

ltr, I was wondering if it was the number of devices that was the problem, so thankyou for confirming that it is not. You have described the problems very cleary. I'm sorry for your frustration, but it is nice to know someone else shares my problem. Kobo helpdesk told me most recently:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Kobo customer care.

Unfortunately this is not possible as you are unable to sync your eReader with your phone. The only way around this is bookmarking on the Kobo website and signing out and back in to your app on your iPhone. This will update your book mark.

Sincerely,
The Kobo Team

I had hoped that after 4 phone calls, with the problem being "escalated" that they actually understood what the problem was, but I have my doubts about that.

I have successfully synced between the Kobo reader, desktop, and Android phone App, but I had to remember to close the mobile app (which seemed to trigger the sync) and to sync the reader. It's been awhile (did it as part of the beta test) so this may not be working now.

I suppose since I've experienced and read so many other posts describing the same problems with the app.

I often wonder if any Kobo staff actually use the desktop app? If so, don't you think they'd eventually go into work and say, "hey, you know that app is terrible. We should scrap it and make it right".

Or how about the beta team? Didn't they tell the developers it had too many problems to release and they should go back to the drawing board? Surely the entire beta team didn't report that, "all is well". I do note those that identify themselves as beta testers don't seem to use it - I think I know why.

Actually, a lot of the work that we saw being done was on the desktop--or more properly, I suppose- on the interaction between the firmware and the desktop. All of the beta testers did our firmware update by flashing the reader and so it's very possible that none of us are using the versions 1.8.X of the reader software.

My experience was that that the version right before the release candidate was messed up in terms of desktop sync, after having gotten it sorted out in an earlier beta. This was kinda sorta a clerical error. The version intended to be the final release (which actually was released as 1.8) appeared to us to have a fully working sync. Could something odd have happened after that, well, I suppose it could have. JCKobo would be the go to guy on this.
