Lofting, Hugh: The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (illus). v2. 03 May 2018

The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, told and illustrated by Hugh Lofting (1886 – 1947)

This book was first published in 1922. The text and illustrations of this book are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.

This second outing of kind-hearted, quirky, animal rights activist Doctor Dolittle is narrated by Tommy Stubbins, now a very old man, who became the Doctor’s assistant when he was nine years old. Tommy finds himself accompanying the good doctor and his crew of animal companions on an exciting, hazardous voyage to find Long Arrow, a native American and the son of Golden Arrow, who is reputed to be the greatest living naturalist in the world. Their travels range from the Mediterranean to South America to the bottom of the sea, and with the help of his animal friends, the Doctor brings solutions to every crisis.

British author Hugh John Lofting (14 January 1886 – 26 September 1947) created the character of Doctor Dolittle, one of the classics of children’s literature. The Doctor first appeared in Lofting’s illustrated letters to his children, written from the trenches while he was serving in the British Army during World War I. The stories (a series of twelve books, the final two completed and published posthumously) are set in early Victorian England. The second in the series, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922), won Lofting the prestigious Newbery Medal.

Despite the author’s obviously benign posture, the books became a target of controversy in the 1960’s amid accusations of racism and attitudes of colonialism, and went out of print for some time. Later editions in the 1980’s were bowdlerized to remove offending content and illustrations. The Doctor and the tales of his adventures are better known today through movie and television adaptations.
(—Extracted and adapted from Wikipedia.)

This ebook is based on text from gutenberg.org, from an early unexpurgated edition. Transcription errors were corrected; punctuation, italics and diacritics formatted; illustrations manually cleaned and enhanced. Embedded font for titling. To provide consistency throughout this series of ten books, some punctuation was modernized and spelling Anglicized and standardized.

This “unsanitized” version gives you a chance to take a stroll down memory lane, and perhaps take the opportunity to discuss those controversial passages with your children.

Thank you for the pair of these. They are so much better looking than the standard Gutenberg texts.

I do find your cover font a little modern looking; I usually really like your choice of font, but this is a slight miss for me personally. I think the title page and chapter titles work better.

Thank you for the feedback. I actually did try the titling font for the cover, but it didn't work well in all-caps, and seemed too light-weight for mixed case. I will probably find the perfect font right after I upload the tenth and final book.

Enjoy your travels with the good Doctor!

Oops, seems I wasn't clear. I meant I thought the interior fonts looked great in their application, not that I wish you had used the same for the cover. I'm useless at choosing the right font personally; in my home-made books I always hate the covers I designed myself haha.
