Done. Not working still. It's like Amazon has had something installed in the operating system that only allows books to be downloaded from Amazon. Which I downloaded one of their free books to verify that works. And it does. If I could open the drive on the unit on my computer, I could copy and paste the books into the correct folder and go on. But when I click on Fire in the file explorer on my computer, it says there are no files. I right click it and it shows the serial number of the Fire HD 8.

Powering down and back up has no effect. If it would, it would have fixed it when I cycled the power on both the Fire and the Computer.
One thing I just noticed in device details under 'USB controlled by', 'This device' is checked. when I try to go to 'Connected device' it says switching for 20 seconds, then changes to Couldn't switch. But it did change the 'Use USB for' from 'No data transfer' to 'File transfer' Didn't do anything. Changed it from 'No data transfer to Midi and a pop up window says KFNOW, or something like, that loaded. Then clicked 'PTP' and the same popup and KFNOW came up. Back to and clicked File transfer and a pop up came on the Calibre screen that said something about the Fire HD 8 and asked if I wanted Calibre to control this device. I clicked yes and the transfer buttons on Calibre showed up. And it just loaded book 11 from my book series. So this is where all of this has to take place. And it wasn't one time clicking things to get it. And partially proves my theory that Amazon did something to make it seem impossible to get it to work like the Fire 7s worked out of the box with no hoops to run through. One more thing.....It seems really weird to me that someone who is as computer illiterate as I am found the issue. After playing with it a little more, I find if I disconnect the USB cable, I have to go back and mess with the above to get it to load another book. Also, in it still doesn't show the folders in File Explorer. Not sure what's up with that. Last edited by Coolmeadow Kid; 08-24-2021 at 08:13 PM. Reason: adding additional information |

Only moderators can remove a message. I generally just edit the message and enter <content deleted>.
With most Android devices, they connect in charging only mode and you need to switch manually to file transfer AKA MTP mode on each connect. Last edited by DNSB; 08-24-2021 at 09:52 PM. |

I don't seem to see a 0x1949 vendor ID in your list (Lab126 uses that ID). Does your Linux box show the exposed USB storage on your Kindle Paperwhite as a mounted storage device? If your operating system doesn't see the device, calibre will not be able to find it.

I'm posting some snips from a Tumbleweed virual machine. One shows the Kindle device as mounted in the file manager and the other is the text output from running calibre-debug -d (wrapped in spoiler to keep the message easier to read). This shows the 0x1949 vendor ID from Lab126 who are responsible for the Kindle ereader firmware.
Spoiler:
Hope this is of some help to you. Edit: From a terminal session, try running df and see if it shows your Kindle. for me it shows as: Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on .... /dev/sdb 28628296 3217512 25410784 12% /run/media/david/Kindle Last edited by DNSB; 10-24-2021 at 09:29 PM. |

Good afternoon. After connecting, the device starts syncing, but soon displays an error:

That is an error listing the files in the device storage. This has been known to happen with some
devices when they contain SD cards. If you remove the SD card, you should be fine. You can try reformatting the card or using a different card as well. |

I do not use a cd card. built-in 256 GB is enough. Perhaps related to the amount of built-in memory? There was no such problem on other devices. The folders that need to be scanned in the settings are prescribed, but it feels like it scans everything in memory. In 20-40 seconds after the start of scanning, it goes into an error.
