Practical Typography's free font recommendations
Charter and IBM Plex serif fonts, recommended by this page are pretty good on the Kindle. Just sharing them out here for anyone that has not tried them:

Bitstream Charter is excellent, too bad it only supports a small character set. Charis SIL is a close derivative with much more comprehensive language support. TeX Gyre Pagella and Crimson Text are also pretty good free serif fonts.
