Hazen, Charles Downer: Modern European History,v1, 1 Nov 2008
European History from the time of the French Revolution until approximately 1922.
It has as its theme the development of representative government. It is a very clear explanation of events and the origins of them. In reading, you can see the development of trends which only become manifest much later in history both in France and Germany prior to World War II. There were many maps which I did not include because they were in color and which might not have gone to black and white well. It should be out of copyright nearly everywhere.
