Reading a physical book is different. Less hurried, more solid. It's not disappearing because of a flat battery, the sentence in the top-left corner of a page stays in top-left corner, the texture of each page is unique, the thickness of "before" and "after" are an anchor of position...
Much as I like Kindle's size and glow-in-the-dark abilities, it also has a bit of a phone/computer's harried urgency. Like a constant noise, though, it was hiding below noticeability threshold until it was suddenly gone (i.e, until I've picked up a bona fide book for the first time in months). Also, the smell is usually nice. Many paperbacks can be dropped and sat upon without so much panic as an electronic device. And don't get me started on art books and colour illustrations in some children's books... e-books can't touch this. Do I buy physical books? Like some people keep away from casinos, I have to keep away from bookshops ![]() |

Every time I read a paper book (seldom though it is) I get annoyed and want to grab one of my Kobos instead. The illumination is not right, it's heavy and a bother to keep open, the font is too small/too faded, I can't search or look up the definition and so on... In short, it's not a relaxing experience at all for me; it's irritating. I let out a relieved sigh when I can put that paper book down at last and return to my ereaders. I don't find ebooks more hurried.
I've not had an issue with flat batteries. I have some power banks and a solar panel if we have months without electricity. I find many printed books have a too small font to save paper. They discolour with age and go mouldy if damp. Time consuming to "backup". All my eBooks have multiple backups. I don't care for smell or texture of books. There is food and drinks for that. It's the content that counts. Art books and children's books are not novels. The eink is best for novels and smaller children better with physical books. For colour and larger material of fixed layout I use a TCL Nxtpaper 11, which is nearly as good as eink for mono novels and pretty good on charge life. If a paper book falls in water, or has a drink spilled on it or is lost or chewed by a dog, it's gone. An ereader can be destroyed, but you still have the backup of all the ebooks. Replacement is about the cost of 10 non=discount paperbacks or one high end art book. It can easily carry 14,000 to 20,000 novels. I have 3,000 paper books and that takes up a huge amount of space. I can easily put the same ebook on my phone, 8″ ereader, 4.7″ ereader and 11″ (approx) tablet. I convert wordprocessor files to ebook and save 1000s of pages of print. |

I haven't picked up a paper book in 14 years.
I'm happy I no longer have to smell molding paper. I'm even happier that I don't have to struggle to read the small print!!!! I love being able to carry 2800+ books with me wherever I go on a variety of machines. When home I read on my pc, when traveling I read on my phone, and when I get to where I'm going I switch over to either my Kobo or my Samsung tablet. Life is good when I can read and listen to tunes at the same time! |

When I am involved in a book, I tend to loose track of the world around me so whether there is music playing is a non-factor. Didn't you hear the kids screaming? What kids?

I had just finished an ebook, there was still time before bed and I didn't have another ebook ready.
So, I picked up one of the only pbooks that I own, a comparison of German and English grammar. As I was reading along I realized that this book had no option to check the time! |

I've had phases where I mostly read e-books for convenience, but every now and then, I get this urge to visit a bookstore and pick up physical copies. Recently, I've developed an interest in finance, and I've been exploring different titles on cashyeah.com/blog/top-finance-books. They've got some great recommendations that have piqued my curiosity, so I'm planning to visit my local library to pick up a few of those titles.

I don't purchase pbooks but the couple I'm currently staying withb have a gigantic library of physical books and continue to purchase them (albeit quite often to complete an existing series).
