Practically, if you mean that authors work directly with a trade organization that distributes their work, that is silly. The publisher does a heck of a lot more than set type. However, if you mean this as a way to avoid orphan books, etc., It may be a good idea. I just don't think an Author, Publisher, or Pamphleteer should be forced into this kind of model. I was going to go so far as to suggest statutory licensing and the difference is the publishing is non exclusive. Anyone could publish any book in the way any radio station can play any song. Whoever can do it the cheapest gets the sale or else they must compete on something else like perhaps hardback vs paperback vs ebook, drm vs no drm. Hey bonus, you'd be able to get a paperback the same day the hardcover is released.
As for the people who make limewire being scum? I think we won't agree there, I've violated a few unjust laws in my short life just for the sake of breaking an unjust law. Copyright laws in any country that holds tot he berne convention is unjust. |

The only reason I buy DRM book is because I can de-drm easily. Else, I would just not buy the books. Trachmania 2 is said to have that crappy ubisoft protection requiring internet connexion. If that the case, i will just not buy it, no mater how much I want the game otherwise. One can live without a game. If you restrict your customer too much, said customer will say "screw you, I don't buy in these conditions". Last edited by EowynCarter; 05-18-2010 at 04:34 AM. |

They do want to pay, they just don't think it is worth what you are asking for it so they pay for pirate copies instead. Whose fault would you say that is?

They have this right, specifically because of rule 2: The consumer can decide not to consume. And you might want to add one more rule to your list: 6. Everything is negotiable. |

If security was all that was needed to accomplish that, the keys to your car, the cable box on your TV and the number on your driver's license would have done us all in a long time ago. Get over the whole Big Brother thing already. Is DRM annoying? Maybe. So are closed stores when you want to shop at 3AM. Doesn't mean you have a God-given right to break a window and take what you want. Some things in life are annoying. Get used to it. |

But I have the right to say "The product don't satisfy me because of drm, I'll live without it." Food is vital, having a roof on your head is vital. Music, books, movies, are not. For music, i didn't bought anything online while they had DRM. Got a few CD instead (and eventually bought less music, as prices discouraged me more often than not). And well, if the "tanks" you get for buying a product is DRM... Quote:

"Here we go round the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush. Here we go round the mulberry bush...all on a Saturday morning."

Unfortunately for you, they have decided to consume without paying instead. The real questions would be how many of them would have paid instead if it was within their perceived value price range, and how many would have paid full price if they didn't need to stand on their head to read it? If the answers to both are a substantial number of them, it would be within your power to do something about it. If the answers are not many, you will need to find ways of making money from free content.
