Twain, Mark: At Large ~ Selected Travel Correspondence. v2. 11 June 2014

Mark Twain AT LARGE
Selected Travel Correspondence

by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835 – 1910)

Contents first published 1856 ~ 1923

Mark Twain is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel." Among dozens of titles, some of his works include The Innocents Abroad, A Tramp Abroad, Roughing It, Life on the Mississippi, The Prince and the Pauper, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and many more.

Like many writers, Mark Twain began his career as a newspaper reporter. Happily for his readers, he brought a wonderful new tone of humorous irreverence to the staid old traditions of travel writing. “At Large” presents 150 pieces of selected newspaper correspondence on some of his travels. Some of the pieces included here eventually appeared in Twain’s books and collections (in particular, much of the Sandwich Island correspondence was included in “Roughing It”), but many did not.

Uploaded At Large, version 2.
Added the Around the World “travel” letters under the heading "Armchair Travels": eight columns written during Twain's tenure as editor on the Buffalo Express 1869-1870. (Read his introduction to the series to learn why the word travel is in quotes.) Some of this material was later used in “Roughing It.”

I removed a group of miscellaneous European letters which already appear in "In Brief."

I added an alphabetic linked index of titles, some css tweaks, and a new cover.

Additionally, I have created and uploaded "The Mark Twain Collections Companion Index," available here.

It lists the locations of the 900 titles included in the collections "In Brief," "At Length," "Out Loud," and "At Large." It also includes a detailed bibliography.
