I had an enlightened English teacher for my 9th grade English class - who gave us "A Clockwork Orange" to read. I've never forgotten either the book or the teacher. Opened my sheltered midwest eyes wide open.
[The teacher was fired a year later on trumped up charges of corrupting youth.] [Mrs. Steinker - wherever you are - I still remember and applaud your courage] Last edited by poohbear_nc; 09-26-2010 at 05:52 PM. |

Well I didn't see it on either of the lists, but I know it was on those lists at one point, and that is The Grapes of Wrath. That is the book that made me a big Steinbeck fan... I never felt as strongly about Of Mice and Men, which is a great read, but not my favorite of Steinbeck or banned books.
As for the lists I'd go for the Silverstein book, A Light in the Attic, mostly because I loved his books when I was young, so young that I guess I'm not sure why that book is on the list. |

His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman. A co-worker had it sitting on his desk, so I borrowed it. I doubt if I would have read it otherwise, but I was curious why so many people wanted it banned.

I've read the whole trilogy. Pretty good. Pullman is a better writer than Rowling (while she comes up with interesting settings, and characters, and plots, IMHO her actual writing-- her prose is pretty darn pedestrian at best.)

I rather liked the trilogy (HIS DARK MATERIALS, with The Golden Compass being the first). It has won several prestigious awards for children's literature.
It has been the center of controversy among those who do not appreciate children being taught Gnostic philosophy. |

I am not at all a fan of Pullman. I only read The Golden Compass because I didn't like the story or the characters enough to continue. Seldom does that happen for me, as I'm a very "stubborn" reader. Heck I made it through 9 books of the Wheel of Time series, which I am convinced there must be some award for doing so. Oh, yeah, there it is... the "you're crazy if you read this far" award! -Pie |
