Miller, Alice Duer: The Charm School (illus). v1. 31 Dec 2021

“[A romantic] comedy, bordering on farce at some points, sprinkled with coincidence, misunderstandings, mysterious behaviour, and a missing Last Will and Testament that has unpredictable consequences.

“The main characters include an incredibly handsome, self-confident, and resourceful young man of business (a car-salesman); his long-time school friend (completing his Law studies); middle-aged parents; elderly grandparents; adolescent school girls; and a young woman who might be romantically connected to the handsome young man if it were not for her bossy mother, her familial obedience, and the lofty social aspirations of the day.

… “Did I mention that it is funny? And a romantic comedy?”

(—John Gough: “The Charm School — Celebrating a Centenary!”)

============
Alice Duer Miller (July 28, 1874 – August 22, 1942) was an American writer whose poetry actively influenced political opinion. Her feminist verses impacted on the women’s suffrage issue, while her verse-play The White Cliffs encouraged U.S. entry into World War II. She also wrote novels and screenplays. Her first book, The Modern Obstacle, was published 1903, but she scored her first major success with Come Out of the Kitchen in 1916. That story was made into a play and later the 1948 film Spring in Park Lane.
