I have thoroughly checked and corrected the formatting, comparing it to print editions wherever available (= all pre-1923 publications). Quotes are curly, footnotes are active, fonts are embedded for small caps, special characters, titles, and chapter headings.

All italics (I hope) have been restored, by converting upper case letters to italics or, if they weren’t present at all, by checking the texts against the paper books. French and Italian accents have also been corrected.

The collection is sorted chronologically by literary genres. There are the usual inline tables of contents and links after each text/chapter to get back to the respective tables. An alphabetical index of stories is also provided. Dates of first publication can be found at the end of the stories.

Two poetry collections, “Verses” and “Twelve Poems” weren’t available, but some of those poems are in the “Uncollected Poems” section. Of the stories, I have transcribed and proof-read “Les metteurs en scène” (her only story written in French) myself, but couldn’t find “Friends” and “Permanent Wave” (see update v.2.0) anywhere. If any of these resurface, I’ll update the volume.

All the books come with their original illustrations (the paintings for “Italian Villas and their Gardens” are marvelous!). As most of the 242 images can be found in the non-fiction books, which are only of secondary interest to some while increasing the file size enormously, I’ve prepared a light version of this edition that only contains the fictional writings. So, choose for yourselves, but, again, the paintings for “Italian Villas and their Gardens” are mar-ve-lous!

This was fun, so I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Best,
pynch.

PS: This is a fancy edition. Changing the stylesheet is, therefore, verboten.

Update v.1.1 | 18 Dec 2012.

Update v.2.0 | 21 May 2017.
Proofed the story collections against the first editions, added the previously missing “The Permanent Wave,” and corrected thousands of mistakes and variants.

Corrected the embedded fonts for support of the newly displayed ligatures in ADE and used the opportunity to change the cover. Those colours were a bit too much, dear.

A Minute Correction

Hello Pynch, and thank you very much for The Complete Works of Edith Wharton. What a great contribution!

I noticed what appears to be an error in Uncollected Stories: the character's name in the first story is Mrs. Manstey, but the title you have in the book is "Mrs. Mansey's View." In your post describing the book you list the story as "Mrs. Manstey's View."

Regards,
Tuxworx

Although this is a fancy edition, you might consider making it play more nicely with style changes, especially with the font.

In particular, I was quite disappointed when I saw that in my reader the inline TOCs came out completely off-center and inactive (no links), which means I have no way to go to some chapter but turning many pages. Now I opened the file with the calibre viewer and see that there are some ornaments which are actually the link, and my reader was probably overriding the font and displaying a large blank instead of the ornament, I'll try to disable that (if possible) next time I have the chance, but there are a couple of things you could also do:

a) Use SVG files, or different characters (an ad-hoc font that has ornaments in place of asterisk, dash, etc.), so that it at least look semi-nice without the font.

b) Put the whole chapter/book title in the link, so that one can use the link even if the ornament does not display.
