L.W. Patricks & Cassandra Clare
Quote:
I was looking at videos on YouTube and found a trailer for a movie to be released next summer called City of Bones and thought to myself, 'That's the first of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series'. So I decided to read it next. Last edited by alansplace; 12-13-2012 at 02:17 AM. Reason: fix text |

With the release of the video set, I decided to go back to the source and actually read the Poldark novels (by Winston Graham). Just finished the first of them, Ross Poldark - and what a treat! Vivid characters and good writing. I'm not usually big on historical fiction, but I genuinely enjoyed this. (Well, remembering the gorgeous Robin Ellis who played Poldark in the television series kind of helped, too.)
Also just finished The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison and enjoyed that, too. Almost done with Mistakes were Made (but not by Me), a non-fiction book about cognitive dissonance and how people fool themselves into believing what they want to believe in order to preserve their self-image. And then it's on to Temple Grandin's The Way I See It. |

Suspension of disbelief required and there are some feel-good moments that add a little cheese to the meal, but I enjoyed the mystery and drama of this one. I even enjoyed the cheese - if even those sections can elicit a dopey smile from me it can't be too bad. I'm wavering between 4 and 4.5 stars for this one. I'm now dividing my time between two books: Brilliance of the Moon by Lian Hearn is one of them to complete the trilogy I started towards the beginning of the year. Because it's a paperback, I needed an ebook to read away from home. And that will be the book club selection for this month: Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks has been on my TBR list for ages so I was thrilled that the nomination got through. |

Just finished The End Of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe, beautiful!
"The spines were of all colors, and there were paperbacks and hardcovers, and books that had lost their dust jackets and ones that never had them. They were Mom's companions and teachers. They had shown her the way. And she was able to look at them as she readied herself for the life everlasting that she knew awaited her. What comfort could be gained from staring at my lifeless e-reader?" Reading this part, makes me regret I gave away LOTS of books, cleaning out my bookshelves, actually a whole bookcase. Sometimes I think, wish I still had them. Looking at every book, every one had a memory. |

Which was an above-average issue. A lovely fantasy "Molly and the Red Hat" and some rather splendid SF.
Next up: The Ancient Future by Traci Harding. Wow - I bought this one back in 2009 in a 100% rebate sale. |

I have been getting rid of my out-of-date technical and reference books, but will likely never give up my favorites/classics/etc. |

Just finished this as well. Great read. I suspect they are going to retire Bosch and continue on with his daughter as the detective. Maybe not but seems that way.

I could just about forgive those. After all, there ought to be something special about her for her to have been chosen by whoever did the time travel spell. She meets a Prince and escort. She knows of the prince (Maelgwn) from history, and so guesses that she's back around 520AD. The prince tells her that there year is, in fact, 519(!) Which is very odd, since the AD method of counting years wasn't invented until six years later, in Rome, and wasn't used widely for many years after, and the first extant British use is by the Venerable Bede in the early 700s. And then there's the dialog. Obviously, the conversations are in Ancient Welsh. but they are erratically translated, sometimes into modern colloquialisms, and sometimes into cod-Shakespearean with 'thy' and 'dost' for no reason that I can tell. I certainly won't be bothering with any further books in the series, so I think it's time to "abandon book" and move onto something else. |

I'm currently reading John Grisham's The Racketeer, which I enjoy and thanks to Gazella, I decided that my next read will be Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.
