I can soon let you all know what happens if you factory reset a W8 pc that's been upgraded to W10 as I'm doing it now. I have a few issues that made me want to use System Restore and I found its off by default so a factory reset is just all I am left with. If it all goes horribly wrong the Surface will go back to John Lewis.
Hopefully if things go okay adding certain programs in a different order will sort out my OneNote issue. I'm doing this as I am unable to install Dropbox at all. Also I stupidly set up Outlook and that's causes annoying messages everytime I open up my Surface, I won't activate that again! Wish me luck! |

Good luck!
I upgraded my Surface Pro to W10 without issues here, but I am little bit confused. The Sleep function seems to have disappeared. It's still there, in the configuration options, and when I close the cover or select Sleep, apparently it should go to sleep. But it doesn't. It just turns off the screen. And it gets hot, as it doesn't stop running all the programs I was running. I can turn it off, but that's not ideal in certain situations. Does anybody else have this issue? Is there a way to fix it? ![]() |

Does "Hibernate" (rather than "Sleep") work?

Yeah, seems to work. And it is pretty fast. I went ahead and selected Hibernate instead of Sleep when closing the cover or pressing the power button.
Thanks! |

My Surface Pro running Windows 8.1 does the same: gets hot and quickly drains the battery with "Sleep", but "Hibernate" works fine.

Surely a software based virtual drive will fail when installing a new operating system?

My restore back to W8.1 and then reloading W10 from my USB key worked fine. I've now activated system restore and created an initial restore point. Incidentally the W10 install gave me a different product key for W10, even though my W8.1 product key stayed the same.

The restore has also sorted out my OneNote sync issue and I can now install Dropbox.

Excellent.
I don't know if it's a bug or I just don't understand something, but on my Desktop when I boot up in the morning my notifications are disables by 'quiet hours' I have to manually enable them each morning (I'm an early riser if that matters) and I've searched all over the settings and Googled and though several googled sites show that Quiet hours can be set, I'm not finding any such setting on my desktop. Also something that seems a bit unusual, but probably isn't is that I have an icon in my taskbar for a virtual keyboard that I can pop up. I'm not really concerned about that, but it is not showing up on my laptop. Laptop is Win 10 Home Desktop is Win 10 Professional Anyone else seeing this or have more information? |

My system is not displaying that option. I'm thinking it is for phones/tablets or some different OS version or configuration... ![]() |

Hmmm. One might reasonably have expected that if your system is implementing "quiet hours", it would provide a way to set them!

That's why I'm thinking it may be a bug......but I'm not seeing anything from googling other than people asking how to set them....

First, I HAVE NOT read through the umpteen thousand entries for this topic, so if the actual answer is buried in here, I apologize...
<flame on> As a user of Windows since 3.1 and DOS before that, I'm pretty used to things not working "perfectly" or often at all, with new versions. But MS managed to exceed even my capacity for sighing heavily and just saying "well, it's just Microsoft"... They essentially FORCE me to use their MediaCreationTool to create a DVD for later installation (I haven't FOUND any way to directly download the ISO), and then have THAT fail with some incomprehensible error that has no meaning amazed even my most cynical side... I DON'T want to install it today, I JUST WANT TO BURN A <insert your favorite vulgarity> DVD... I've now wasted 2 hours scouring the Internet for posts from the umpteen thousands of people that are getting THE SAME <repeat> MESSAGE. And coming up with umpteen things that DON'T WORK... From "Run as Administrator" which didn't work to "Change Local and Language Settings to English" which didn't work to "Disable or Uninstall Antivirus Program or Internet Security Suite" which IS MICROSOFTS TOOL AND STILL DIDN'T WORK to "Make sure all these services are turned on automatic" WHICH DIDN'T WORK to "run wuauclt.exe /updatenow" which DIDN'T WORK to on and on and on........ It's been a while since Microsoft managed to frustrate and infuriate me to quite this level, but they've managed to find a way again... I've gotta go find a puppy to kick or something 'cause this is utterly ridiculous. It HAS to be either deliberate or they just totally screwed the pooch on testing AGAIN 'cause this is BEYOND stupid. <flame off> If anybody has an ACTUAL METHOD THAT WILL WORK TO GET THIS *&^%$#@ Media Creation Tool to work so I can create a DVD, please put it in here... |
