David, what would I need to do if I plan on using my older iMac (late 2013 running High Sierra). I'm hesitant to do anything like this on my new iMac anyway. Should I just go with the updated DeDRM and the .ascm plugin mentioned, or can I somehow run the ADE 2.0 (but I don't know how).

I thought I read somewhere that I shouldn't upgrade Calibre past 4.23. I've been reading so many posts now that I can't remember what that was in reference to though.

Thank you for your response.

Christine

Looking at the calibre download page for Mac OS, the last version you can run on High Sierra would be 3.48 which would preclude using the latest DeDRM or DeACSM. If I remember correctly, High Sierra can still run 32 bit apps so you should be able to install and use ADE 2 so that would probably be the best way for you to go.

ADE 2.0.1 is available from Adobe if you have the patience to find the link. Or you can use Adobe Digital Editions 2.0.1 to save you the search.

calibre 3.48 for Mac OSX is available calibre's download page at calibre-3.48.0.dmg

Apprentice Harper's site still has DeDRM 6.8.1 available.

Good luck.

noDRM's DeDRM may work with Python 2 calibre. From the changelog:

Quote:
Added back support for Python2 (Calibre 2.0+). Only tested with ADEPT (PDF & EPUB) and Readium LCP so far, please open an issue if there's errors with other book types.

I do have Adobe 2.0.1 on my older iMac and I will use it. However, I don't know how to open it since when I try, I get a message that says a newer version is available. There is a big red X through the program icon I believe (I'm not at that computer at the moment). Is there a special way to circumvent the newer version of Adobe Digital Editions so that I can open the 2.0.1 version?

calibre 3.48 for Mac OSX is available calibre's download page at calibre-3.48.0.dmg

Apprentice Harper's site still has DeDRM 6.8.1 available.

Do I need to download this version (6.8.1), or can I get by with my old version of DeDRM if I can get my ADE 2.0.1 to start up? I think (but I'm not sure) that the ADE is the big hang-up for my set up at the moment. If I find a way to open the old ADE on my older iMac, I'm thinking all will be well. I might be wrong. It has happened!

Good luck.
I have no idea what the next responder below you response is talking about, which goes to show you how little I know about what I'm doing. So the easier we can make this, the better. But I thank anyone who tries to help me.

I also don't know how to respond within the QUOTES in my response above. I have inserted each reply within the quote above. I hope you see my responses in the positions I typed them. UGH.

@lkmiller was referencing the newest rendition of the DeDRM Tools which are now being maintained by nodrm. 6.8.1 was the last Python2 version from Apprentice Harper et alia. I have not tested nodrm's version with Python2 so stuck with recommending 6.8.1.

BINGO! I got it to work. I decided to play around with the ADE 2.0.1 and see if I could get it to load. It didn't look like it was working because I got a blank screen when I opened a book. But I checked Calibre anyway and to book was ready to be added to the library. ADE quit unexpectedly in this middle of this and just clicked to restart it. Everything just fell into place. Thank you all for your help. I don't know how long this will last. It may just be a band aid, but I'm glad it is working for now.

It is a bit of a pain, but you can wrap your inline additions with end quote and quote tags like below.

If you need to intersperse responses in a lengthy quote, you have to break up the quote by closing the quote with a "[/quote]" where you want to break it, type in your response, then start a new quote from that point by inserting a "[quote]" at the next section you want to quote. Rinse, repeat as required. You can check if it's working as you want by clicking the Preview Post button before you actually post.

re DMCA takedown

I'm surprised that software of this sort was hosted on Microsoft-owned (and presumably US-based) servers. I wonder if we'll we'll see a Pirate Bay style game of whack-a-mole now?

This is going to be problematic, I fear. Hopefully a solution is found soonish. Not that I'm too concerned, since all my accounts have eInk Kindles attached to them. But still...

I suppose someone could make a version (basing it on a downloaded copy of the DeDRM plugin) that doesn't include the LCP DRM removal technology.

It seems like the Apprentice's approach to library books was the right one for survival....
