I believe you just described a scene out of a Haruki Murakami novel, Tom.

In other news, it's not gotten out of the 20s as of 9:00a. I am waiting for it to warm up at least to above freezing before I start out on my walking errands.

Heat

At 08:30am it's 30°C, wouldn't be surprised if it nudged 40 by days end, more in the western 'burbs.

That's ~86 and 104°F in imperial units

We should also be 40 on Christmas. So odd how our American winters and your Australian summers match if we forget the letters.
Of course our 40 will be your 4.

Middle of last summer I was posting in C because 42C sounds cooler than 109F.

Forecast for tomorrow is 23°C in Sydney, would imagine 23°F is about as low as it gets in Texas.

I have a friend in who lives in the middle of Siberia (Kemerovo), he talks of an unimaginable -40°C in winter - it's also odd that -40°C is in fact -40°F.

Actually Red, you are very mistaken. No worries, it is a common mistake. Parts of Texas can and do get to 0 F in the winter. Other parts get to 0 C maybe once every 20 years.
Yes, all of Texas gets hot in the summer. But the weather varies drastically in the winter. You have to consider in latitude there are right at a thousand miles from the top of Texas to the bottom of Texas.
Amarillo and above spend most of their winter highs below freezing and the nights get mighty cold. Houston on the other hand rarely gets below 50 for a low.

Even in the summer, there can be a 40 degree span between the daytime high and the nighttime low in the desert.

What people fail to realize is Texas has at least 4 different ecosystems. I think 5.
We have the plains rather like Kansas, we have the mountains at least 2 different mountain ranges, we have the hill country, we have a good size forest, we have the coast which does get hurricanes and we have a huge desert. Oh and then we have Austin.
Our elevations range from sea level to 8,751 ft (2667 m) and everything in between.
Christmas itself where I am ranges from I'm dreaming of a white Christmas to let the kids ride their new bikes in short sleeves. This year will be cold and partly cloudy though a few degrees warmer than originally forecast.

It is a myth that Texas is always hot. No we don't all have oil wells and cattle either.

We had a beautiful spring day! The high temperature was in the mid-50s (F), there was sun through some thin clouds, and a good breeze. Sunset came too early, though, what with it still being mid-December.

Expecting a soggy Xmas this year.

Yes, I knew Texas was quite big; about a quarter the size of Western Australia and less than half its height

WA also gets very hot, Marble Bar holds world record for most consecutive days above 100°F. But, because its southern parts are on the coast, WA is not so cold - snow is almost unknown. And Texas is probably higher than WA; no where in Australia is very high.

Sandgropers (West Aussies) don't all own iron ore mines or cattle either, they don't even have the worlds largest cattle station (ranch), 'coz that's next door in South Australia

Southerly Buster blew in about 3PM, went from 38°C to 22°C in about half an hour.

I do know our weather patterns are very similar, just 6 months apart. I am not sure what part of Australia a woman was in but she had moved from England. I know her landscape was similar to mine. She had a very hard time understanding the weather. I know there are regions in Australia where it goes from hot days to cool nights in the summer. Same in Texas.
You have to have a high area. You have the second largest telescope in the world. Between it and McDonald Observatory, most of the world's night sky is covered.

Now back to the weather, today's high will be 21°c (70°f) and the low will be 4°c (40° f).

Another beautiful day -- sun, a few widely scattered clouds, temperature in the 40s (F). The Solstice is tomorrow, I believe, but sunset has been getting later for more than a week and that's a good trend. (Today's sunset was at 4:34; on the 14th it was at 4:32.)

Almost everywhere away from the coast has hot days and cool nights - desert climate.

Maybe the English woman got confused by the upside down moon

The highest point in Australia is Mt Kosciusko (7,310 ft), highest point in Texas is Guadalupe Peak (8,751 ft).

I am not sure about having the second largest telescope - maybe radio-telescope, we have 'lots' of those - but don't think we have any really big optical telescopes. The largest is probably at Siding Springs, where there are a bunch of optical 'scopes. Maybe they can configure them into a single device, I know that can be done with radio-scopes - not sure about optical. It's not that high there, but it is a long way from 'civilisation', so very little light pollution, and its very dry, so very clear.

Low 20s today, no wind, so quite sticky

We were told when we went to McDonald Observatory about your telescope .
Or that you were soon to get one.
I didn't realize except around the edges you are a desert.
