Murder at the Open
by Angus MacVicar

Angus MacVicar and Aidan Campbell are both keen golfers, taking a much-needed break at the legendary St. Andrews during the Open Championship.
But their hopes of enjoy a relaxing week of playing and watching golf are disrupted when they find the body of American millionaire Conrad J. Livingston, buried in a bunker.
Perhaps most people would have alerted the police of such a discovery and left them to it, but Aidan Campbell is a University professor with a more than inquisitive attitude.
Angus is fully aware of his friend's investigative manner, and quickly realises that their relaxing week of playing golf would turn into everything but.
In charge of the case is Inspector Samuel McLintock, who has no problem with the extra help from Angus and Aidan, especially given the latter's skills in `deductive logic'.

Angus MacVicar was a Scottish writer, his other books include The Singing Spider, The Ten Green Brothers and Crime's Masquerader

Free on Amazon UK - Dead Letter Day (Detective Johnny Inch series Book 3) by J F Straker

Spoiler:
Detectives Johnny Inch and Humphrey Nicodemus have resigned from the force and set up business together as Private Investigators.

When they were still in the force two brothers, Martin and Joseph Slade, had attacked a security van outside a City goldsmith’s, knocking out the guards and escaping with gold bullion to the value of thirty thousand pounds.

Although the brothers had been caught, the gold was never found.

And now, on his death bed, Martin Slade has arranged to have four letters posted, each containing part of a clue to the location of stolen gold.

When a young woman turns up with one of the letters Inch and Nicodemus immediately take up the case.

But with Martin dead, they need to track down the other letters.

Like the others, Inch is after the gold. But he wants the reward, not the precious metal itself.

And if he can make the discovery in a solo run, before circumstances forced him to call on the police for aid, he stands to make his name as a Private Investigator.

But the recipients soon realize that the prize within their grasp is unobtainable without the clues contained in the other three letters.

And each hunts down the other in an effort to be first to the loot - at any price...

As Inch gets caught up in this murderous treasure hunt, will he beat the others to claim his reward?

Or is there truth in the saying that all that glitters is not gold…?

Free on Amazon UK - The Gold Solution (A Norma and Alexander Gold Thriller Book 1) by Herbert Resnicow

Spoiler:
Is this the perfect crime…?

Meet Norma and Alexandra Gold – New York Sleuths with an old-fashioned solution to murder.

They solve it – it’s as simple as that.

Irascible, brilliant, and somewhat overweight Alexander Gold was recovering from a heart attack.

Yet Norma Gold was sure her good friend Pearl would be the death of him with her incessant request that Alexander solve a murder!

But as Pearl pointed out, Alexander Gold was a genius at solving puzzles and this puzzling case had everybody stumped.

One of America’s top architects, Roger Talbott, had been mysteriously killed in the locked studio atop his New York townhouse.

The only suspect happened to be the nice young man engaged to Pearl’s niece, who was caught red-handed with the murder weapon.

When Norma starts digging, she soon finds multiple motives for murder bubbling just below the surface.

It is very clear that Talbott was not a popular man, particularly among his business partners.

Together, Norma and Alexander are a formidable crime solving duo.

But have they finally come across a case that they cannot solve?

Spoiler:
How should we approach our own impending mortality…?

Accept it passively?

Bow to fate’s steadfast resolve magnanimously and without regrets?

Her task, should she accept it, is to terminate Albert’s seventy plus years on planet earth swiftly, professionally and when he least expects it.

Stephen King's Full Dark, No Stars is currently 99p at Amazon UK.

Quote:
Is it possible to fully know anyone? Even those we love the most? What tips someone over the edge to commit a crime?

For a Nebraska farmer, the turning point comes when his wife threatens to sell off the family homestead.

A cozy mystery writer plots a savage revenge after a brutal encounter with a stranger.

Dave Streeter gets the chance to cure himself from illness - if he agrees to impose misery on an old rival.

And Darcy Anderson discovers a box containing her husband's dark and terrifying secrets - he's not the man who keeps his nails short and collects coins. And now he's heading home . . .

Like DIFFERENT SEASONS and FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, FULL DARK, NO STARS proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

Open Road has the first four mysteries in the Rabbi Small series by Harry Kemelman on sale in an omnibus at $3.99 at Kindle US. Not sure how long this pricing will last - Open Road price drops are often single day/quite short. Several (all?) of these titles have been on sale individually before, so check carefully to see if it will make sense for you to buy the omnibus.

The titles in the omnibus are:
  • Friday the Rabbi Slept Late
  • Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry
  • Sunday the Rabbi Stayed Home
  • Monday the Rabbi Took Off
link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZERAIT

Spoiler:
Quote:
A collection of four novels from the New York Times–bestselling, Edgar Award–winning mystery series starring a rabbi in a tiny New England town.

Spend a long weekend with the scholar and spiritual leader who watches over the Jewish community in 1960s Barnard’s Crossing, Massachusetts—and in his spare time, solves crimes.

Friday the Rabbi Slept Late: A young nanny is found dead in the temple parking lot—and her purse is discovered in Rabbi David Small’s car. Now he has to collaborate with the local Irish-Catholic police chief to exonerate himself.

Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry: Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, is defiled when a body is found—and the rabbi must uncover who has something to atone for.

Sunday the Rabbi Stayed Home: When Passover is overshadowed by congregational politics and a murder at a local university, the rabbi must study the clues.

Monday the Rabbi Took Off: Rabbi Small journeys to Israel for a bit of peace, but instead has to team up with an Orthodox cop to unravel a bombing case.

Don’t miss these four mystery novels featuring an amateur detective who uses Talmudic logic—an introduction to the multimillion-selling series that provides both “an eye-opening snapshot of a particular time in Jewish-American history” and delightfully entertaining whodunits (Los Angeles Review of Books).

It would be a good deal even if you only wanted one of them! At Amazon UK this series is about £6.70 (around $9) a book.

I second the recommendation. I've read the first five books in the series so far and enjoyed them all.

I only had Friday as an ebook and one other* as a beat up old paperback. Thanks!

* Using days of the week in the title is a good way to establish a series, but years later all of the days run together. I think it was "Monday."

Of course, one DOES run out of weekdays a lot sooner than Sue Grafton has run out of letters

So later he had to resort to Someday the Rabbi Will Leave, One Fine Day the Rabbi Bought a Cross, and other such titles with plain non-weekday days in them.

This was one of the first series I enjoyed as a youngster reading DTBs after I realized that authors other than Agatha Christie also wrote mysteries , and so I've been glad to pick them up one by one when they have been on sale. I guess this means I'm fourthing the recommendation...if that is even a word, which my spellchecker tells me rather emphatically that it is not..
